1st Battle of Taipale
In three days from April 5th to April 8 three Soviet tank divisions are mauled, with over a hundred tanks destroyed and more captured. The initial Soviet advance into Finland is entirely repulsed.
The Conflict
Prelude
The Red army began Massive artillery and air bombardments on prepared Finnish positions beginning on April 4th and continuing into the morning of April 5th as Red Army columns moved into attack positions. Finland, well aware of this route, had heavily fortified the area since before the outbreak of hostilities.
The Engagement
Well concealed and entrench Finnish anti-tank guns work in conjunction with teams of infantry to isolate and destroy sections of the advancing Soviet tank columns. This combined with pre-registered Finnish artillery strikes proved devastating against Soviet tank formations closely packed into road columns.
Outcome
Initial Soviet advance brought to a halt.
Aftermath
The Soviets are forced into an operational pause as they regroup and prepare the continue their offensive.
