Megacorps become a possibility

The greatness and glory of the American people and the American nation has always been its openness to the benefits of freedom. We know that when our people are left to their own devices, when they are allowed to invent and build and grow on their own, they inevitably come up with the great ideas and marvellous innovations that define us as a people. While it is true that the government has acted as a force for good at times, when it has brought benefits to a wide swathe of the American people, it is perhaps even more true that the government has most blessed our nation when it stands aside and lets the innovators, the builders, and the inventors to use their God-given talents to improve us as a nation.   ...   I started this campaign because of my faith in you, the American people. Not a faith that you would vote for me - though I certainly hoped that would be the case [laughter] - but the faith that you, not Washington, know what is best for your nation. You know what your nation and its citizens need, and you know how to deliver it. I look forward, in the next four years to seeing your ingenuity, your energy and your perseverance in action. I look forward to watching you continue to make America great!
— Excerpt from Victory Speech of President-Elect Martin Hunt, 7th November 2000

In a nutshell, the so-called Shiawase Decision was actually a series of events that set the stage for megacorp extraterritoriality.

The year before Hunt's victory, the US Supreme Court finds that corporations are allowed to hold their own private armies.
In July, the Shiawase Corporation are given permission to build a nuclear reactor with limited Nuclear Regulatory Commission oversight.
Hunt is elected president on the theme of "Smaller Government. More Freedom." in November, after which the Shiawase plant goes online. The corporation are fully poised to take advantage of Hunt's win, and they change the face of the world in doing so.
By February 2001, the Shiawase Corporation was the first to be granted extraterritoriality.
