The United Canadian and American States

The UCAS—land of the free, home of the brave. No matter how much the megacorporations control the lives of the citizens, no matter how many government officials are caught selling out their constituents for a thin grasp at power, no matter how many sham elections put corporate-controlled puppets into power, UCAS residents still hold true to this old, outdated image. What they are in truth is a nation of great wealth and tremendous power, and if the citizens are lucky, they might someday touch a small piece of it.
The United Canadian and American States, also referred to as the UCAS, is a federal republic in eastern North America, stretching from the Atlantic in the east to the beginning of the Rocky Mountains. It is the successor state to both the United States of America and Canada. The country has 31 states, which have a level of local autonomy according to the system of federalism, and a special district, the Federal District of Columbia, encompassing the capital Washington DC. The state of Seattle is sometimes designated as the metroplex of Seattle, though it possesses all the attributes of a Union State. A UCAS citizen may be referred as an American or a Canadian, UCASer or Canadian-American.   Formed from a union between the Dominion of Canada and the United States of America, the UCAS was founded on October 15, 2030. The new nation suffered from attrition and secession between 2034 and 2038 as the southern states, California, and Hawaii each seceded. A democratic society created in the aftermath of the Awakening and the rise of the corporate state, the UCAS government drew heavily upon the American Constitution when forming the new UCAS Constitution. though several key changes were made, the governmental structures are very similar to those which ruled throughout the USA prior to the formation of the UCAS.   As a signatory of the Business Recognition Accords, the UCAS recognizes extra-territoriality of AA and AAA megacorporations. The UCAS constitution also recognizes contract law, particularly in the area of employment contracts. UCAS law treats extraterritorial corporations in a similar manner to foreign powers, signing extradition agreements and formal trade agreements. A social implication of the changes to contract law was the secularization of marriage, allowing the formation of contractual obligations in marriage and setting terms for dissolution of the contract.
> With the new laws about marriage, same-sex and multi-partner marriages are now commonplace throughout the country. While the majority of marriages still fall under “traditional” guidelines, S-Groups are gaining in popularity. Who knew, Heinlein was right.

>The nation that was America is unsure of its place in the world. Grasping at the last straws of its former glory, the politicians are desperate to deny the reality that their time as a global superpower has come to a close. >

>Politically, the nation is more divided than it has ever been and there is no room for moderates in the halls of power. Each of the half-dozen political parties has its own extreme view of the path the country should take. While the Mago-crats of the New Century Party are unlikely to win a majority anytime soon, good ol' jingoism in on the rise among both Republicans and Democrats, while the Archconservative party isn't even hiding its fascist ideals. They rattle sabres at their neighboring states, eyeing their lands' resources as the key to making America great again.

>But they sold off America's bones to private interests just to stay afloat, that the country is little more than a middle-man between corporation and consumer. A side effect of this is that with the endless entertainment and sedation the corporations provide, the majority of UCASers are apolitical. The fiery rhetoric spewed by these cowboy nationalists falls on the apathetically deaf ears of John Q. Wageslave getting his dopamine fix from the dings of their social feeds.

>But that won't stop the good ol' American can-do spirit from launching a pointless quagmire at one of their neighbors with the unwavering support of 5% of the 20% of the country that actually still votes.
