Auburn

If Tacoma has the aroma, Auburn has the Hum. If Tacoma has the docks, Auburn has the factories. This is industry town, blue collar to the core. There is at least one factory somewhere in the district running no matter what day, and what hour. It’s how the ‘hum’ got its name. That blue collar mindset makes the place real insular though. Auburnites don’t like to talk to outsiders much, so have a care.

The first thing people talk about when they get close to Auburn is the hum. The sound, like the famous Taos hum, seems to come from everywhere at once, a low frequency buzz that can only be the result of 363 square kilometers of industrial equipment churning twenty-four hours a day. The people who live here put up with it, because that is who they are—survivors. They are the blue-collar wageslaves who keep the gears of Seattle spinning. This mentality results in a community that is extremely insular, preferring to take care of its own problems. Those problems are plentiful, including a budding race war and a Mafia family trying desperately to hold on to its claim.

On the bright side, real-estate prices here are excellent, which is why a handful of tech start-ups chose to make Auburn the new Silicon Valley. New capital and new attitudes have not gone well with the locals, leading to a cultural separation that mirrors the age-old separation of haves and have nots.
> With all of the automated manufacturing, Auburn is the easiest place in Seattle to acquire cheap gear and services, but the community isn’t big on outsiders. You need to know someone in order to get anywhere in Auburn, so get real good at making friends and keeping them.

Demographics

Typical mix for Seattle. Most inhabitants are blue collar workers.

Government

Mayor Zax Pound-Down, a flamboyant ork, was elected in 2048. He was concerned with the environmental degradation in the district, and had to fight off a number of smear campaigns.

Geography

Auburn is an industrial district of smoke-belching factories and blue-collar (read: downtrodden) workers. Auburn is bordered by Renton in the north, Tacoma in the west, Puyallup in the south, and the lands of the Salish-Shidhe Council in the east. Green River flows through the district.

Economy

Auburn has over 400 factories, metal refineries, and petrochemical plants, and thus it is the manufacturing and industry heart of Seattle. The biggest factories are the ones owned by Federated Boeing, including the huge Boeing facility in eastern Auburn. Renraku has a computer hardware complex in the district's west end, easily the largest factory of its type.

Culture

Auburn boasts its own amateur baseball (Auburn Cardinals) and Urban Brawl (Auburn Rubblers) teams, and the Seattle International Raceway is in this district.
