Situation Report Twenty-Six

General Summary

The Garks are savage, but don't fight in a coordinated manner and we suffer only one serious injury, to Numal, before we drive them off. In hindsight, the arrival of a whip-fast Wyvern, diving from the light clouds could have contributed to the Gark's sudden scattering.   As I'm best armoured and closest to the top of the ziggurat, I sprint up the slope while waving my arms to attract it's attention. "Bloody idiot", I reflect as the sinuous beast dives to attack me. I manage to set my legs and take a firm grip of the axe before it's on me. "No time for heroics now Cran," I think as I defend myself with every ounce of knowledge I've accumulated over the years. My deflecting parrys buy enough time for the rest of the crew to stabilise Numal and clamber up the Ziggurat to join the battle. The distinct clear tones of Sylke considering clambering on her hands and knees up the rough cliff edge ring across the small valley, "Screw that, I''m a mage". Seconds later she appears on top of the cliff.   I'm getting exhausted by the continuous rolls, dodges and parrys needed to fend off the reaching claws and poisonous tail. Just when I think we have reached a stalemate, Sharna lands a couple of telling kicks to the creature, distracting it sufficiently for me to land a massive blow that partially cleaves through wing tendons before embedding my axe head in it's ribs. It screeches and attempts to lumber skyward, where Cherry and I begin firing arrows at it.   It is Sylke's reckless bravery that finally finishes it however, for the mad mage transports herself onto the creature's neck, some 40 feet off the ground and calmly fires a shock bolt into it's head. She even manages to do a passable effective roll off the doomed creature as it plummets to crash into the scrub on the slopes of the ziggurat.   After a rest to lick our wounds and ensure Numal is OK, we clamber to the top of the ziggurat, where we find a series of lights in a 4×4 pattern that toggle on and off if they are stepped on. After five minutes of trying to crack the pattern and light them all, I give my brain a rest and sit on a stone step. Bloody mages.
