Demons Of The Burning Night: Part Seven

General Summary

The mummy proves to be a difficult opponent but is soon beaten back into the sarcophagus but the noise of the combat alerts more of the temple's inhabitants and a number of other embalmed guardians are attracted to the small chamber that the party are now trapped in. Though the creatures have but a single doorway with which to enter, the companions now have no way out. Alarmed at the strength of the creature they have just defeated, Ugnan attempts to create a pit in front of the door to further slow the creature's advance. Though his first attempt goes somewhat awry, the second cast works perfectly.   The three undead that now attempt to attack the party struggle to get out of the 5-foot deep pit and with the advantage of height, Cran and the others make short work of hacking the creatures apart. The monsters cleary have eerie regenerative abilities and at Cherry's suggestion, they are burned.   Exhausted and with a host of minor wounds the party decide to rest and recover in the chamber they have just fought in; the pit and door make excellent barricades.   The creatures were unable to explore or even approach any of the warded-doors but they have been able to roam the corridors that lead beyond those doors whose wards have, for some reason, failed. Heading towards the door in the south that the creatures battered down, Cherry leads the others into a small chamber that is lined with stone sarcophagi, all upright. Three of them have lids that now lie smashed on the floor, another half-dozen or so are intact. The room appears otherwise empty and Cherry, closely followed by Cran, enters to search further. A loose stone betrays the trap too late and a painful grating noise reverberates through the chamber and up the stone stairs to Sylke and the rest of the party as the remaining sarcophagi now open!   Cran is able to retreat a few steps to guard the narrow stone stairs that exit the chamber but Cherry is now surrounded and unable to get to the staircase. Ugnan acts almost without thought and steps up to Cran and uses the magical properties of his shield to teleport Cherry to safety. However, half-a-dozen creatures still remain and they advance on Cran and the staircase …
