Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented Reality (AR) implants are common in 2048. Ocular implants project images directly into the optic nerve, allowing holographic or diegetic virtual elements to be projected over top of the visual field. These AR elements are frequently informational, taking the form of 2-dimensional "hover text", but can incorporate small 3D elements as well. AR images always have an obvious "hollow" appearance, making them easy to discern for the average user. However, it is not unheard of for well crafted AR to occlude or distract from real world objects, or be mistaken for real world objects by users partaking in psychotropic substances.

AR Intrusions

Originally defined as an "unwanted or unintended AR projection", AR intrusions make use of passive priority display codes embedded within the AR protocol, or impalnts firmware. AR intrusions allow the seemingly spontaneous displays of ambiance effects on displays other than ones connected with the source device, and has been harnessed by any number of advertisement venues.

Utility

AR displays are ubiquitous in the world and are used to display anything from stove temperature, to vehicle speedometer, to navigation aids. They are also used to add cheap and easy to alter decor to living or social spaces. Advertisements are also common, with most models receiving either wireless ad subscriptions or ambient broadcast ad displays.   AR implants passively receive AR broadcasts from up to 50 m, and display them for the user. While some precautions are taken that users receives only certain AR signals, it is not uncommon for unwanted or unintended "AR intrusions" to be displayed. It is illegal in most jurisdictions to alter or modify AR implants to, for instance, disable the ad subscription service.

Manufacturing

All major corporations manufacture variations of AR implants. Those produced by Toyota-Huawei are most commonly available due to their low cost (free and ad supported in many jurisdictions). Higher end models are available from Disney-Amazon and Apple-Mercedes corporations. Many military forces replace AR implants of their soldiers with those manufactured by Confederated Boeing, which offer high precision links with military hardware.
Access & Availability
AR implants are commonly available in all countries, and implants are mandatory by law in many jurisdictions.
