The princess or the Crown

Create an article about a clever conflict you plan to introduce to your Main Character or your Player Characters. Explain why the plot is perfect to mess with their heads!
So my players are one a quest to steal the crown of an evil king, and as it turns out the crown is the phylactery of a litch who secretly hired them to return it to them. Little do they know that the king long ago cast true poly morph on the crown and turned it into a human girl who he has raised as his daughter. Now through some plot and writing magic she still functions as a phylactery, and as we all known the only way to truly beat a litch is to destroy their one means of resurrection. This means that the players will have to decide whether they kill the princess who is totally innocent and whom they have grown to care about over the course of the campaign, or to let the litch live and find some other way to destroy him knowing they will never truly defeat him as long as the princess lives. Over the course of the campaign I will have them meet the princess before they know her true identity and endear her to the group maybe even have a romance form between her and one of the party members just to make that choice later on that much more difficult. Also if the party decides not to kill her and she does come into contact with the litch he will make every attempt possible to try and turn her back into the phylactery with each attempt weakening her defenses until eventually she is gone. Now the party might try to poly morph her back but will be informed that doing so would create nothing but a human shaped shell with nothing inside. The only true way to save her is to cast the reincarnation spell on her, which only works if she gave one of them a lock of her hair or they have some piece of her left. If they manage to cast this spell correctly then I will fully allow her to come back safe and memory's intact, however if they do not manage to learn this spell, or keep some part of her with them then she will be gone forever.
