Dægra, The Shattered World

Home, Broken Home

Planets that bear life are not a common thing in the universe. These rare balls of dirt and water are the elusive settings for tales of lofty kings and lowly thieves. Dægra is no different in this aspect. Many lives find adventure, fear, glory, love and loss on the pillars of Dægra but a cursory glance at this world will let many know that it's similarities are fewer than expected.

A Shattered World Within A Ball

Dægra exists within a larger spherical, mono-solar cosmos. It spins on it's own axis and rotates around what it's people refer to as the Day Star & Night Star, however, it's gravity is extra-planetary in origin and anything that is not stopped by the planet itself will plummet into the contained infinity below.

Above And Below

The southernmost point of Dægra is the most planet-like Dægra will ever get. At the southern pole, all the water that flows from rivers off massive cliffs, detritus tossed off the edge, and unfortunate beings that find themselves descending to the bottom of Dægra collect in the dark and flooded bowl that is the lower 8th of the planet, referred to as the Nether. Eternally being filled, all manner of object will spill over the top or disappear to the bottom never to be seen by surface eyes again. Even divination magic has yet to pierce the dark mystery at the bottom of Dægra.   From the bottom bowl of the planet spring massive pillars of stone and earth that rise to form the livable spaces on Dægra. They rise to various heights and brave explorers have found some solid ground beyond the reach of the Day Star. Sitting atop these pillars are nations and peoples as varied and complex as any other place teeming with life.

In Sickness And In Health

Dæ archivists have dug deep to find any records of life on Dægra without The BioRot. This arcane disease crippled the birth rates of creatures planet-wide. If not disposed of properly, these stillbirths would grow like seeds into monsters that tainted lands and bodies of water for miles. The lack of resources to feed their people and the lack of new people to fight off the plague pushed the nations of Dægra to cannibalize each other to survive. War scarred the land until Artuzrim Matryu unified the nations to create an end to the BioRot and peace for all the Dæ.   At the start of this curated story, the BioRot threat had been eradicated for 50 years and Atuzrim's son, Artuzo, now sits upon the throne of the entire planet.

What Content Can I Use?

Whatever can be found atop the Pillars of Dægra is up to you. Are the Dæ still swinging blades and slinging spells just to survive? Maybe pull from or entirely implement GreyHawk or Faerun. Has technology planted it's steel roots into the lives of the Dæ? Ebberon or even SHADOWRUN content can work here. This is YOUR game and it can be whatever you want it to be. There are a few things that may need to be tweaked to fit your chosen campaign setting:
  • The Center Sea: Water is imperative for life to happen. The way Dægra is designed, it would not make biological sense fot there not to be a large source of water to feed the rivers, lakes, estuaries and people of Dægra. If you do decided to ditch The Center Sea, you'll have to deal with the water problem somehow.
  • The Nether: It's very easy to replace The Nether with The Underdark that we're all used to. Just remember that the things that live in that darkness give the most capable Mind Flayers nightmares. This is where the first tastes of epic level adventures are supposed to happen. pace your power crawl.
  • Other Planets: There are 4 other planets of varied degrees of technological maturity that are waiting to be used for Epic Level Adventures but it's not necessary that you even acknowledge them. Your story can CENTER around these 5 worlds if you so choose. Just keep in mind the sheer effort needed to get a single vessel to a distant world is mind-boggling.
  • The BioRot: The content in the campaign setting is all designed to happen after the BioRot has been mitigated to the point that it is no longer a GLOBAL threat but that does not mean that you can't set your story before the events that led up to The Converging of the Pillars. Just be familiar with the effects of BioRot and the cures that you will NOT have access to.
