Undeath

The living dead are creatures removed from the conventional cycle of life and death. It has a wide variety across the multiverse but while their specific form may diverge most of them can be related to the same exact basic phenomenon.
There are fundamentally two different kinds of undead, the soulless and the cursed souls. The former are typically zombies or skeletons bearing only the most rudimentary of instincts. Devoid of a soul they only possess the empty spiritual husk left behind by the departed soul. On the other hand, cursed souls boast a much larger diversity as they encompass both skeletons and zombies (often called ghouls to avoid confusion with their mindless counterparts) and much more exotic forms of undeath such as liches, vampires, and specters. While they possess indeed a soul it is not required to be the same soul of the deceased. Certain undead are inhabited by other departed spirits or even by demonic entities known as Astrals.
A prevailing trait shared among all undead beings is their unique spiritual energy. Unlike living organisms that thrive on vital energy, the undead draw their vitality from a completely opposite font of energy known as negative energy; a force that consumes and it is consumed by vital energy. It's due to this nature that undead beings find themselves vulnerable to the effects of vital energy, being damaged by it rather than healed like negative energy harms living beings.
