Feather Prairie

Feather Prairie is a hidden valley shaped like a triangle. It is hidden in the middle of 3 mountain ranges. The Latchris Range boarders the East side, the Amter Range boarders the West side, and the Camint Range boarders the North side.   The original mountain range, Aladurn Range, was created by a continental collision. A series of normal faults broke the Aladurn Range, creating the thin Latchris and Amter ranges and creating a plain in between the split range. At this point, the plain was devoid of life most life. The North side was boarded by the ocean, and the constant winds made the habitat inhabitable for flora or fauna. Rock outcrops that occurred due to the normal faulting were weathered away from the ocean winds.   Another continental collision created another mountain range where the ocean was. This did destroy part of the plain but it has since regained the size due to the normal faulting that has extend into the new mountain range. However, this new faulting has not yet broken apart the Camint Range, but has made small progress in doing so. Due to the new protection of the Camint Range, wildlife began to flourish on the plain. Most notably was the grasses, which were one of the hearty plants which could survive the harsh condition of the coastline. Due to the lack of wind in the enclosed plain, the grasses evolved to have small, light seed with large pappus, which causes the prairie to look as if it is covered in down feathers. Due to its sheltered location, Feather Prairie experience less than a few inches of rainfall per year. Instead, wildlife relies on the seasonal snowmelt from the mountains each year. Streams through the prairies before they drain into a small basin near the Camint range. The water here is not suitable for drinking as it has a high salt content. During the dry season, the basin dries and to create the Feather Salt Flat.   Bird and rodents make up the majority of the animals that inhabit the Feather Prairie. Predator that live in the prairie are small cats, such as the several, caracal, and African wild cat, genets, and the Ethiopian wolf.    Due to the Feather Prairie's inclosed location, it is inaccessible to large animals either predator or prey. The only exception to this rule are pegasi, winged horses who are able to fly over the mountain ranges and settle in the prairie. The lack of large predator or humans make this location ideal for the pegasi to rear their young. The enclosed location also shields the pegasi from winds which make it an ideal location for parents to teach their young to fly.   Most activity happens in the Feather Prairie during the spring and summer months, as that is when the snowmelt happens and when the prairie is abundant in plants and food. Once the seasons turn to fall, dry season begins and the plant life begins to die. Most animals that live in the prairie are migratory, such as most birds and pegasi, who will leave once the weather begins to change. A few bird species along with rodents will weather the dry season, usually by hiding a store of food for the leaner months. Rodents may hibernate during the winter months until food is more readily available. Many predators will retreat back into the mountains in search of better prey.
