Lukach

There are three primary grains in Salune, and each one grows differently. Buziesu grows in watery, misty climates, granlima grows in wooded and field-covered climates, and lukach grows in dry and rocky climates.   The dry regions are Chenkakar (the desert), Isha Eski (the Northern Coast), and Temar Femuli (the "Barren Jewel"), and the rocky regions are Jarvat (the mountains) and Sheska Ast (the "Dragon's Fang").   Lukach is the staple of these societies. The plant looks similar to Earth's moss as it grows in "sheets", but is tougher, and it takes root deep beneath the ground. The visible end of each plant is typically only about half its length. This type of growth allows the lukach to pull moisture from the ground while also receiving a great amount of sunlight on the surface. For the most efficient harvest, one must pry the visible half from its host rock, and then dig up the dirt or stones surrounding the lukach to pull the rest out. A lukach plant that has completed its growth will be about two feet wide and six feet long. The plant is very strong and if one wants to cut it, she must use a knife or sharp stone.   Once harvested, lukach can be ground and added to water, forming a soft, slightly sour-tasting paste, the consistency of which is similar to West African fufu. The paste is called lukuba, and is served in a large bowl at every meal. Everyone* at the table will pull off pieces with which to scoop stews and sauces. Thus, lukuba is mainly eaten as a base for a meal, but can be eaten plain as well.   For those who do not weave and/or do not trade, lukach is also excellent for making clothing. Two full sized lukach plants can make a simple tunic--one is folded over each shoulder, and then a belt is tied around the waist to hold them together.   Whether for eating, wearing, or even just observing, lukach is an essential part of life in the dry regions of Salune.     *The peoples of the dry regions are, primarily, Dwarves, Oceanids (only along the coast), and Northern and Western Elves. The dominant peoples of the rocky regions are Oreads, Northern Elves, and, once again, Oceanids along the coast.
