Session X: chasing harpies

General Summary

Our heroes indulge in a little downtime after returning to Saltmarsh. Eliandra goes back to making furniture at the group's country house. Whimbrel bought a pony and rode off to a monastery to learn and meditate. Lyra researched in some of books that she'd taken, and began to take up the path of a Ship Mage. Zaria spent some time at her apartment in town. Although she was dodging her family gatherings, she spent most of her evenings at the soldiers' and dwarves' bar in town, where she made two friends.
One of those friends was a veteran named +Kilmean, the part-time mayor of one of the small hamlets around the dwarven mine. This one is on some cliffs near the coast, and a pair of harpies are bothering some of the citizens. Zaria agrees to lead everyone out to Hars' Point and see if they could clear this up.
A morning or two later, Grogu is sailing the fishing boat with all on board and the skiff in tow. Approaching Hars' Point, they pass near the large rock in the sea where the harpies are believed to nest, the Giant's Chair.
Sure enough, the harpies started singing to lure the boat onto the rocks under the surface. Instead, they got shot full of arrows and magic missiles, while Grogu tried-- mostly successfully-- to avoid the reef. One harpy was shot down, the other fled behind the Giant's Chair. Zaria and Eliandra swam to the big rock (about 20 feet high), observing a shipwreck at its base, then climbed the wet rock to see the harpy nursing its wounds on the lee side of the rock. They killed her there, but not before noticing three things.
  • the rock had the remains of a small tower built on top, that led down inside.
  • there was a cave entrance on one side, that might connect to the tower's foundation.
  • there was half of a fish flopping on the waterline, even though it should have been quite dead.

  •   Eventually, everyone regrouped on top of the rock, and proceeded inside.
The third room had three human(?) skeletons inside, plus a lot of crab shells. Once disturbed, the crab exoskeletons-- not the human skeletons-- rose up and began swarming Grogu. He did a lot of damage to them with a thunderwave, but nearly took out Lyra as well.
They started looking around, and Zaria found a poisoned fishhook on the other door, which hurt a lot. Many more crabs were heard approaching, so everyone decided to retreat to the boats and rest up for a bit.
