The medieval land of Sala consists of three nations: the western kingdom of Aurora, the eastern feudal land of Caligo, and the southern empire of Leirion. The continent itself stretches far beyond these nations, but no one has made the journey beyond the borders and returned. To the west is an ocean, across which are the remnants of the Old World. To the north, beyond the White Mountains, are the hostile Wildlands where tribes of bandits and dangerous creatures roam. To the east is the Silent Forest where the magical natives of precolonial Sala dwell and punish any humans that wander too close. And, finally, to the south is the Dhayra Desert, an uninhabitable stretch of hot sand that has been creeping upon Leirion's territory for centuries. With these obstacles, the nations remain confined within their outer borders, and many wars for territory and resources have been fought over the years.   The people of Leirion and the magical beings are the only true original inhabitants of the land. Magic and magic usage used to be a lot more common before the western settlers showed up and drove the native humans south and drove the native creatures east. These settlers would come to form Aurora and Caligo, but only after much bloodshed. In the current timeline, the three nations are at relative peace, although tensions remain high. There are differences in government, religion, and tolerance/acceptance of magic in each. Caligo continues to hunt and kill magical beings, while Aurora has become tolerant of their presence. As the most accepting, the people of Leirion actively practice magic and work alongside magical beings. These differences contribute to disagreements, but trade has been prioritized in recent years for the sake of self preservation. However, squabbles over territory have not desisted, and recent political moves have put the nations on edge. It is possible that another war may be on the horizon.
