Kuen the Opportunist

Kuen is manipulative, tactful, and devious. However, he is also quite charismatic. Kuen distinguished himself as a shrewd businessman at a very young age. His skills attracted the attention of several important people, and had been earmarked by his family for more.

Personal history

As a young man within the military college Kuen was training to be another soldier when a passing fad within the school changed his life forever. Dueling had become fashionable within the school and Kuen like most of his classmates would never excel. But what Kuen did do well in was manipulation. After contacting a local smith he had him craft several unusual weapons that were not taught within the school. After picking up some pamphlets on the proper use of the exotic weapons he went into a duel weilding a three section staff. At once Kuen stood out and even though the opponent was thrown off by the unusual weapon Kuen was soundly trounced. Kuen made a passing comment on how he would have done better had he brought a wooden sword and anyone who was bright enough knew they had to get an unique weapon. Dueling was all about standing out and showing your prowess. Using an interesting weapon meant you would be remembered and even though he had lost because the weapon was unwieldy it gave the impression he was much better than expected. Soon he was selling weapons and books on their use to almost the entire school.
With the money he made he established himself within the Guild as a merchant who could acquire necessary resources quickly no matter the cost. In truth Kuen knew of where to purchase in bulk and had spread the rumors to allow his customers to pay for expediting their sales thus making a name for himself. But by the time Kuen graduated he had reached the limits of his abilities as a merchant. While he made a name for himself he made only a small profit off the sales and each time he risked his reputation. With the dueling fad having long since died out Kuen was no longer special and could no longer supply the students for whatever they had fancied.
Kuen held on too long to his clout and lost his chance to marry above his station, thinking he could do better he instead was left behind. Using the majority of his funds he managed to purchase a position of minor importance that could prove beneficial in the long should things go wrong and Kuen is there to pick things up. While there are many in the courts who do well for their prowess Kuen plans on doing something daring and become rich and famous for being a hero. But for that to happen he needs something to go wrong.
