[Tenuis]

Little is known about the early history of the [Tenuis], or of those who created them. Evidence suggests that the [Tenuis] were created as a last-ditch effort to ensure the survival of their predecessors, known now as the Proto-[Tenuis]. The Proto-[Tenuis] were on the loosing side of a war, and were on the verge of being completely wiped out. In one final, desperate attempt to save their species, the last survivors uploaded their minds to a secret computer bank hidden below the surface. It worked, at least for a while.   As the years passed and systems started to break, it became clear that those who were uploaded would not survive. They would succumb to errors and code corruption long before they could be rediscovered. And so, they created the first true [Tenuis], constructed from the code that had not yet been corrupted. This would continue for two million years, each generation becoming more adapted to their digital world, and less attached to the real world their ancestors had fled.   Things changed in 2079, when Resal explorers discovered their planet and excavated the computer bank. With the help of Human and Ammon computer scientists, the Resalum were able to contact the [Tenuis]. Most preferred to remain in the bank, but those who wished to see the outside world were given robotic bodies with which to do so.   [Tenuis] are fairly rare outside of their servers, and are otherwise evenly distributed across accessible space. As the only sapient AI, their help is invaluable in many scientific fields.
