Honoring the Dead

On the first day of every month, the moon Xui is a new moon and cannot be seen by the naked eye. Legends state that the dead pause their travels to convene on both Xui and Valair when they are in the new moon phase. Valair is only open to Rynal when Xui is also open.   The old tales stress that because there are so many who have died, not all can find a place on Xui every month. Some dead, perhaps because of their acts while living, are tied solely to Valair and can only travel to Rynal when both moons have 'left the sky'.   Food and drink: Traditionally, the people of The Kettle celebrate and honor the dead by almost exclusively consuming root vegetables and tubers in reverence to the place their loved one's rest - under the earth. Mead and honeyed drinks are also common to consume on this day. Bees are believed to carry The Thread of Life with them and are treated with great respect, but honey is thought to prolong life and allow a deeper connectivity to the spirit realm.   It has become common for cities to gather in the streets around bonfires, sharing roasted meat smothered in honey, herbs and spices, and stuffed with tubers and root vegetables. Doorways are decorated with flowers or seasonal plants, but it is not uncommon to find a home with flowery vines manicured around the door year-round.   Regardless of whether one adheres to these traditions or not, they may be visited by friends or family who have passed on. The spirits can be seen by all those who are living and may stay on Rynal until the first rays of the sun appear over the horizon. Although all the living may see the spirit, the dead can only see and hear other spirits and the one person they requested to visit.
