RPG News Roundup 12-3-2022

Hello, this is the RPG Crawler, and welcome to another RPG News Roundup, this time for December 3rd, 2022, where each week I take a look back at the week in tabletop, computer, and console roleplaying game news and bring you the highlights. But before we dive into the news, I’d like to welcome a new channel sponsor this month. Worldanvil.   WorldAnvil is a set of tools to help with worldbuilding for gamers and authors. Featuring twenty five plus templates for details such as characters, locations, myths, legends, and more, You can link articles and events onto interactive maps and timelines for ease of navigation through the Chronicles system; set up family trees and organization charts; and even set up rollable random tables.   For role-players, there’s a set of GM Tools with out of the box support for 45+ rpgs (including most versions of D&D), homebrew support, and the ability to customize your system. Share the world and lore with your players, manage games, set what your players can see, and embed audio and video to set the atmosphere.   Players can use character creation tools for the supported systems with extensive character management. Comprehensive sheets can be set with entries for things like inventory, journals, spellbooks, vehicle and follower stats.   Elements useful for rpgs are also useful for Authors and other creatives. Create your world bible to keep your plots, timelines, and histories straight, but also write and collaborate with an editor or team, then monetize the creation with exclusive access to sections of your world, lore, and stories. Complete novel writing software lets you write and edit direct on the site.   Worldanvil offers pricing tiers suited to different needs, and you can get a 40% discount off of any yearly subscriptions by using coupon code RPGCRAWLER when you sign up with my link.   And with that, let’s dive into the news, starting right with computer and console rpg news. It looks like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is getting its release on steam in a few days, on the 6th. Available on other platforms and through other storefronts for some considerable amount of time by now, this open world game is now going to be available to those who prefer to use Steam only. Not that it’s going to help, as it’ll still include Denuvo and require an Ubisoft account, apparently.   The newest expansion for Path of Exile, The Forbidden Sanctum, is set for release on December 9th on PC, then the 14th on PS4 and Xbox One, as a free update as always. It will add a new challenge league, new roguelike areas, a new award system involving a new currency, new items, skills, and so forth.   Anime inspired jrpg Mato Anomalies is set for release on March 10th of next year. It looks like it’ll be targeted for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch. It has you playing a detective and an exorcist, meaning to uncover the cause of the city’s invasion by supernatural creatures.   Then, Monster Hunter Rise is getting a release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, on January 20th of next year. It has been available on the switch and pc for a while now. It looks like its expansion Sunbreak will also be released a bit later, in spring.   Upcoming RPG Maker Unite, the newest entry into the RPG Maker series that will be using the unity engine, looks like it will be delayed. It’ll now pushed back to spring of next year on PC. And in other RPG Maker news, it looks like the 3DS exclusive RPG Maker Fes servers will be coming down on March 31st of next year as well. Understandable, since that’s about the time the Nintendo 3DS eshop is going to shut down too.   As far as actual releases go, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide saw its release. It looks like it’s an iteration of the Vermintide style series, multiplayer only in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. However, I appears as though there are some … issues as it stands right now.   Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered saw its release on steam. It is a remastered version of the old PS2 Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song, which… if I recall correctly was a remake of something itself. This new version includes upgraded graphics and quality of life enhancements, improved gameplay, and so forth.   Marvel’s Midnight Suns saw its release on PC. It is a turn based tactical rpg set in the Marvel universe, that lets you make an original hero, and work with characters from other marvel properties.   And then, Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited saw its release on mobile platforms. Available on iOS and Android, it’s an enhanced version of the original PS3 era tactical rpg.   Action rpg Curse of Eternity saw its release. It has you playing one of three heroes, though you can change their skills as time goes on, and features various stamina based combat as you fight your way through a dystopian world.   Eden’s Last Sunrise saw its release. It is a classic turn based tactical rpg in a world where magic and technology are clashing, letting you recruit and train troops from various types, customize your heroes, and more.   Dwarf’s Adventure saw its release into early access. It is a dungeon crawler style game where you can create your own level and share them on the steam workshop, and generally seek to accomplish whatever objective is set for each dungeon you play.   Then, Dungeon of Death saw its release. It’s a lo fi 3d adventure game with rpg elements, basically having you explore a dungeon to face off against the necromancer who had raised you. As in… you know, reanimated, not like… raised raised.   And if you don’t mind the sort of crude graphics in some games, there’s Fantasy of War, a strategy rpg/wargame where you move various units around on a map, seeking to fight through various enemies to advance, letting your troops gain experience to level up.   Sonucido the Mage saw its release. It’s a grid based, turn based dungeon crawler where you are basically descending through a first person view dungeon to find the mage within.   Finally, there’s Munchkin: Digital, a version of the classic RPG spoof card game, set to an old school 2d adventure/rpg style presentation. It has been released into early access.   And with that, we can move on to tabletop gaming. It looks like D&D One is bowing to the pressure of the immature and ignorant and removing the term race from the terminology of the game. At least kudos on them for using the neutral term ‘species’ and not going the route of Ancestry and Heritage.   Anyway, back to the real world, it looks like Modiphius’ license for the Conan RPG will be expiring at the end of this month, meaning that no more restocks for the Conan 2d20 system will be produced, with the intent to sell it all by June 30th of next year. Going forward, the license will go to Monolith, which will also be working on the board game.   It looks like the Blade Runner RPG from free league is getting a release on December 13th. There are pre orders available now, and it’ll be set in a futuristic LA, in the year 2037, with a sort of neon noir setting popularized by the movies.   On toward minor releases and pdfs, Fantasy Salad has The Heir of Prince Peryton, an introductory adventure for pathfinder 1st edition, geared for younger players just starting out. It features a competition to reach the top of a tower.   Then there’s Stardrives from Joel Kreissman. Suited for Starfinder, it provides rules for alternative methods of interstellar travel, including three new faster than light drives, and multiple slower drives, wormholes, a system for calculating interplanetary travel times, and more.   Underground Oracle has the Martial Archetypes Time Strider and Temporal Knight. They are part of a crossover event with From Afar Podcast, and offer two versions of the same time based fighter archetype, each one with unique lore, but identical abilities.   Steve Conley has Intoximancy for fifth edition. It is a wizard subclass, based on drinking. It includes the rules for the subclass, including those for the magic drinking vessels they rely on, new spells and magic items, and a few new creatures.   Brigand Publishing has The Crumbling Tower, a fifth edition adventure for the World of Avlis setting, but useful for any setting, suitable for third to fifth level characters. It deals with a group of bandits who have raided supply caravans, and stolen a holy relic.   CZRPG Has The Great Library, a fifth edition supplement that presents a ready to use location for any setting, basically a library of knowledge and wisdom, that protects a special guest.   Beyond the Horizon has Of Reefs & Ruin, for fifth edition and pathfinder 2nd edition. It is a one shot adventure suitable for fifth level that deals with an island prison, where the party has been hired to provide extra security.   Dark Realm Maps has Return to Morley’s Workshop, a one shot for fifth edition characters from levels 2 to 4. It’s set in the same area where Murder at Morley’s Workshop was, and deals with exterminating a creature that’s come through a portal.   Grim Press has Drop-in Dungeons, a group of five ready made dungeons for 2nd level fifth edition characters, each of which has a variety of traps, combat, rp and investigation options, new monsters, magic items, and so forth.   Architects of the Deep has Kidnapping in Carolvane, a fifth edition holiday one shot adventure, that deals with kidnappings, thieves, and evil gingerbread men…   Elven Tower has a few more adventures for fifth edition. There’s Terror Below Sorlang, for fifth level characters. A collaboration with Daniel’s Maps, it covers a peaceful town that was once the focus of a war, and now faces a threat from below. The Hulking Abomination is a level 6 adventure, and is a collaboration with Victor Escalante of Monstrous Tokens, and deals with a mining site where a famous archaeologist and his entourage got lost. Finally there’s slave to the Power of Death, another collaboration, this time with Mikwewa Maps. Suited for level 9, it deals with a massive pyramid which rose from the depths of a forest.   The Crypt of Boden Carr is a 2nd level 5th edition adventure from Grey Desert Studio, that deals with the lost tomb of a long dead warlord, recently rediscovered and sought for various reasons.   Cute Creatures Compendium is now available in print, and offers a number of cute creatures for fifth edition, with Crs ranging from 0 to 30. It includes various options for familiars, steeds, and more, complete with rules to tame and befriend some of them, various illustrations, and adventure hooks.   Black Lantern has two main offerings. There’s Soulmist, a dark fantasy world setting based on fifth edition, that deals with a world where the people have united to try to face off against the Dark Saints, who hide in the shadows beyond the darklands. It includes a new world setting, five new races, a non magical Scholar class, new subclasses, backgrounds, feats, a new magical tradition, and more. Then there’s The Darklands, a monster filled supplement for the Soulmist setting, which includes over 30 new monsters and nightmares, the ten Dark Saints, new rules, and so forth.   Nightfall Games has three offerings, all regarding the Hellboy game. First is Hellboy: The Roleplaying game. Based on the Hellboy universe, its core rulebook lets you play a member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, and includes character creation, various roles and customization, equipment, a rulesystem based on the fifth edition system, as well as a basic bestiary of foes, and a standalone adventure. Then there’s the BPRD Field Manual, that gives lore and background on the information in the world, new mechanics for options as well as the complete fifth edition ruleset. Finally there’s Korhonen Series part one – Cannister 7, the first entry in a multipart campaign arc.   The Tabletop Engineer has Delver issue 6, a collection of random rolling tables for Old School Essentials and other osr games, as well as articles and an adventure: A Vampire Problem. They also have Book of Tombs, a collection of maps for one off adventures, suitable for fantasy roleplaying games in general. They include some random tables to provide extra details, along with twenty legendary magic items.   Unsound Methods has The Oneiric Hinterlands, a sandbox campaign inspired by fairytales and folklore. It is designed for Old School Essentials Advanced Fantasy, and compatible with similar rulesets, and covers an enchanted woodland, where the lord has disappeared and reality has begun to warp.   Churn, Stroke, Burn from Orbital Intelligence is a linked collection of 3 adventures for dungeon crawl classics, which includes the Town of Churn, a point crawl across the ocean, then a depth crawl through the eye of a hurricane, complete with supplement tables, 30 new creatures, 24 npcs, and so forth.   Shadow from the Stars from Creation’s Edge Games is a Swords & Wizardry mini dungeon, suitable for levels 8-10. It features an observatory that has been taken over by an evil cult, looking to use its telescope to fulfill an ancient prophecy.   Knotty Works has BX Game Options Volume IV, yet another collection of material for BX style osr games. This one includes the concept of Feats, as well as two classes: the Barbarian and the Shaman, as well as rules to produce various magic items.   Izegrim Creations has Bugbears and Borderlands, a sort of basic version of D&D, stripped down to be easier to read and play, almost a sort of OSR version of 5th edition. It is available in three books, the first two: Player’s Guide and GM Guide, are available in hard back and cover player facing and GM facing rules respectively, while there is a single volume softcover version that includes both books.   Starry Knight Press has Merry Monsters: An Icelandic Holiday Bestiary. It’s an old school OSR style bestiary, this one featuring holiday themed monsters from Icelandic folklore. It includes details on Gryla, Leppaludi, the Yule Cat, and the Yule Lads.   Precis Intermedia is back with another classic game reprint. This time it’s Sir Pellinore’s Book, a collection of magic medieval adventures from 1978 in the Sir Pellinore’s Game series. It the first of three editions, which shows some of the work of the early tabletop game designers.   Mysthead from Yesterweird Press is a system neutral micro setting for seafaring and swashbuckling adventures. It includes a map of the setting with nine regions and their people, various tables for passengers, cargoes, vessels, and so forth, as well as two demihuman backgrounds.   Sine Nomine Publishing has The Atlas of the Latter Earth, available in print, a far future earth setting for the Worlds Without Number setting. I includes a full setting guide with history, more than a dozen major lands, new classes, a bestiary, new optional rules, additional foci, and so forth.   Iron Crown Enterprises has Rolemaster Unified Core Law, the core of the Rolemaster roleplaying game. The Rolemaster Unified is said to be the latest version, this one complete with professions, races, cultures, a system of talents and flaws, and more.   The Red Room has Agents of WRETCH, a sourcebook for playing spies in the Wretchploitation compatible gaming system, designed around a group of special agents who are constantly on call, knowing each mission could be their last.   Warlock! Dark Reflections, available in print, is a sandbox campaign module for the Warlock! System, itself inspired by early British tabletop gaming. This campaign contains the history, factions, and major players of the campaign, various adventure sites, and expanded rules.   Bite Sized Gaming has Tim Kask’s Expanded Curse of the Weaver Queen. It’s a new system neutral version of the Curse of the Weaver Queen from Tim Kask, and includes the adventures Curse of the Weaver Queen and Cult of the Weaver Queen, a bestiary, custom maps, and virtual tabletop tokens.   Blood, Sweat & Steel, available in print, is an rpg about survival in a barbaric world. It’s a swords and sorcery tabletop rpg based on the Fudge system.   Cubicle 7 has Wrath & Glory Starter Set, a quick starter set for the Wrath and Glory system in Warhammer 40,000. It includes a starter adventure, details on the ships, crew, and internal politics of the fleet involved, some pre generated characters, and rules reference sheets.   Rivers of London: The Roleplaying Game, from Chaosium, is an rpg based on the Rivers of London series, a world where magic has returned to the world, and the players work as members of the London Metropolian Police Service’s special magic branch, looking to solve mysteries and catch criminals in a magical world.   Hunters Entertainment has Altered Carbon – Dataslate Edition, a roleplaying game based on the Netflix series, set in a world with advanced technology that lets you put your consciousness into a new body. There’s also Bay City Confidential, a campaign for Altered Carbon, that gives details on Bay City, a cast to interact with, and three brand new scenarios for the game.   Finally, there’s Rogue Element from InkForge. It’s a roleplaying game set in a high tech world of action adventure, with its own core mechanic, various rules for everything from combat to netrunning, six genotypes, a number of character paths, gear, vehicles, and a creature codex and setting primer.   And now, onto crowdfunding campaigns. Remember that contributing to a crowdfunding campaign should be done only at your own risk. Doing so is no guarantee of even receiving a product. Mention here is not an endorsement, but is for informational purposes only.   There were only a few this month, so we’ll start with The Lathspell, for pathfinder and fifth edition. It’s based on a martial, curse wielding class from third edition, and will include a full level 1 to 20 class with its abilities and so forth.   Midwinter Vampires is to be a vampire hunting 5th edition adventure, one of the penny blood series, it also will include a vampire class, to allow for playable vampires from levels 1 to 20.   Villainous Champions of the Shadow Keep is to be a campaign setting for fifth edition that lets you be the villain. It will include a dozen new races and archetypes, many monsters and followers, artifacts and traps, and is basically designed around designing your lair and defending it.   The Wilderkind is to be an assortment of animal character options for fifth edition and castles and crusades. Made for the Chronicles of Aeres setting, it is supposed to show a sort of Redwall style tone, allowing for the creation of a party of animal adventurers.   Finally, there’s Legionnaire, a supplement for Lancer RPG that focuses on NHPs, the strange artificial intelligences for the Lancer universe, and will include a variety of GM tools and player options to incorporate them into the game.   And on that note, I will wrap things up here.
