RPG News Roundup 12-24-2022

Hello, this is the RPG Crawler, and it is time once again for another RPG News Roundup, this time for December 24th, 2022, where each week I take a look back at the week in tabletop, computer, and console role-playing game news and bring you the highlights.

Any rate, let’s head on into computer and console role-playing game news. It looks like Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, which have been available on pc and mobile for a while now, are slated to get console releases coming up in spring of 2023. Targeted for PS4 and Switch, they will be available individually or in a bundle with all six titles in a collection. Further, physical copies of the full collection will be available as well at that time.
And in further Final Fantasy related news, the next major patch update for Final Fantasy XIV End walker is set for January 10th. It looks like it’ll include various story and challenge content, adjustments to jobs, new pvp content, and so forth.
GrimGrimoire OnceMore looks like it’s getting a western release. Set for April 4th of 2023, April 7th in Europe, it’ll be targeted for the PS4, PS5, and Switch. GrimGrimoire OnceMore is a remaster of a PS2 era real time strategy title. Not sure how RPGish it is, although with skill trees and such, those lines can blur.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is set for release on July 7th, targeting PC, PS4, PS5, and the Switch. Set after The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV, it’ll follow three main protagonists with over fifty characters, allowing one to switch between various parties during play.
Born of Bread, a party based rpg focusing on a ‘Flour Golem’ is set for release on PC in summer of next year. A 2.5 style turn based rpg adventure, it has you playing Loaf, a flour golem seeking to defend your land from various threats.
As far as actual releases go… wow, it looks like Warsim: The Realm of Aslona actually saw its release from early access. It’s a text based ascii style rpg that I covered on my indie game Friday years ago, and it looks like they’ve done quite well at tooling it up in the time since. It is mostly a kingdom management game with rpg elements.
Then, Sports Story saw its release on Switch. It is a sequel to Golf Story, and is effectively an rpg with sports, mini games and… dungeon crawling.
Open World RPG WestFallen saw a release into early access. It has you exploring and questing through a world in an attempt to avenge your family, navigating a kingdom at war.
BeastieBay DX saw a release on steam. It’s an RPG/Sim style game from Kairosoft, that has you washed ashore on a deserted island, which you must develop by planting crops, building housing, and other structures, while facing off against the wildlife, capturing creatures and either trading or fighting with them.
Finally, Mazecraft saw its release. It is a very classic lookng turn based roguelike with pixel art, seeing you proceed down through a procedurally generated maze, facing off against monsters and gathering various loot.
And now, onto tabletop gaming news. The big news that had been revolving was talk about the updated OGL for One D&D, coming out sometime early next year. It looks like a fair number of changes to the OGL are specifically geared toward giving Wizards of the Coast more control over ‘videos and video game content’, as well as web sites and things like virtual tabletops, in addition to giving them some degree of content control over potential releases, and the ability to go after larger content publishing for royalties. So in other words, the new ‘Open’ Gaming License doesn’t look to be very ‘Open’ at all.
Fortunately, prior iterations of the OGL are nonrescindable for those versions of D&D which they were released for, so for people in the OSR, fans of 3.x material, and even 5th edition fans… those content providers will be able to continue going forward with what they were doing. Now, I totally get why WotC would try to make such a change going forward. After all, the existence of an OGL paired with an unpopular version of their product did launch one of their main competitors in the space for a period of years.
Actually, come to think of it, a more restrictive change to the license, paired with a stated focus on online content and subscription support, as well as potential changes to some basic premises that effectively ‘define’ D&D in a number of people’s eyes? Where have I heard this one… before…
Nah, it’ll be alright, history never repeats, right?
At any rate, enough of that. It is the season, so to speak, so let’s take a look at a few tabletop bundles available at the moment. Humble Bundle has a few out, but I’ll cover two: There’s Warhammer 4000 Wrath & Glory bundle from Cubicle 7. Proceeds go to supporting Children’s Health Ireland, so a good way to give to treating sick kids and get some warhammer 40k material together.
Then there’s the New Perils for Classic Dungeon Crawls bundle from Goodman Games, through humble bundle. This one goes to supporting the Starlight Foundation, designed to support sick kids and their family through entertainment and such. This bundle includes a number of offerings for Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG and its iterations.
Finally, Bundle of Holding has a number of offerings at the moment, including 13th Age, Blades in the Dark, Rifts, and the Fantasy Trip. The Fantasy trip bundle goes to supporting the Diana Jones Award for Emerging Designers, looking to support up and coming game designers on their way to Gen Con each year.
And with that, we can go into minor and pdf releases. Eldritch Osiris games has a number of offerings for Pathfinder 2nd edition. There’s Eldritch Classes: Medium, a 20 level class focused on souls, with a subclass, several spells, and a number of feats. Then there’s several Eldritch Ancestries, each one covering a different type, with an ancestry and several heritages, a number of feats, and artwork. They have the Bugbear, the Merfolk, the Morshes – Basically a Leshy plant folk type, and the Felsine – small little furry types.
Moving on to pathfinder 1st edition, Legendary Games has Legendary Companions, a player focused supplement that deals with familiars, bonded mounts, animal companions, and so forth, offering expanded rules for all sorts of companion focused character options.
And then on to 5th edition, we’ll start with Menagerie of Adventures #3, from Menagerie Press. It’s a collection of five first to ninth level 5th edition adventures. These adventures include The Pool of Desultation, The God Wheel, The Music of Chthon, The Jubile Tower, and Sozrinoth’s Temple.
In the City of Forgotten Gods from The Corodon is a mega module for fifth edition, suited to take characters from first to fifth level. It deals with the City of Tura, and has you facing off against evil paladins, meeting a new god, discovering rare crystals, dealing with a haunted house, and more.
Cirque du Nocturne has Killer Clowns, for fifth edition. It is a zine that covers various circus horrors for fifth edition, as well as a Mime as a new playable race.
Once again, Adventures Await Studios has several fifth edition adventures out. There’s the Snowman Cometh, a third level adventures that deals with an attack on Klaus’s home, Realm of the Runekeeper is suited for fifth level characters, and deals with a deity of secrets, puzzles, and riddles. Ride of the Headless Horror is a 3rd level adventure that covers a set of graverobbers accidentally releasing a vengeful spirit. Stonehill Blues is suited for 3rd level and deals with a bandit base that’s encountered a basilisk. Curse of the Weregiant is a 9th level adventure that features a giant infected by lycanthropy. Strange Lights is a 3rd level adventure that covers a mine overrun with ankhegs, The Horrors of Hill House is a 5th level adventure that revolves around a rich man’s home where a collection of gems turns out to be various oozes in stasis.
The Halls of Havareem is a 9th level adventure that is set at an archmage’s fortress home. The Tomb of Tzentak is a 7th level adventure that deals with a forgotten temple fortress complex, That Which Lurks Beneath is another 7th level adventure, this time dealing with an aboleth, Tomb of the Grave Knight is a 5th level adventure that features an evil king returned from the grave, and finally Sword of the Ember Knight is a 3rd level adventure that… also deals with an evil king returning from the past.
N Antoniou has 3 more 5th edition adventures out. There’s The Frontier Keep, which revolves around the raiding of a farmland, which sets the inhabitants out to adventure. The Ebon Glass deals with a group of mysterious raiders, and a tower that has gone silent. Then The Goblin Wars of Lushania covers a set of goblin and orcs at war.
Dragonshorn Studios has two 5th edition and 3.5 edition dual compatible adventures. There’s Dungeon Crawl – The Unraveled Tower, a one shot dungeon for level 8 characters that takes place within a tower between planes. Then Sanctuary of Serpents is another one shot dungeon crawl for 4th level characters, focusing on snakefolk living in a jungle.
The Year Without a Cinderclaws, from Hack Shack Games, is a 5th edition adventure for levels 2-4, inspired by both medieval yule horrors and modern tv holiday specials. In a land where each year, the wicked creature called Cinderclaws comes for a tithe of blood, now the winter snows haven’t come, and strange things are afoot.
Frog God Games has Beware the Yule Cat, available in 5th edition, Castles & Crusades, and Old School Essentials versions. It’s an adventure set in the Northlands, where the party stops to find food and shelter, only to find the town deserted, and the villagers behind locked doors for fear of the evil fae troll Gryla, her Yule Lads, and the Yule Cat.
Extraordinary Player Options from Crit Academy has a fair number of player options for fifth edition, including a new monk tradition, a new ranger archetype, two new rogue archetypes, a new wizard tradition, and a warlord class with its own subclasses.
Handimonsters Annual 2023, from Handiwork Games, is a collection of 33 5th edition monsters, created across the last year, and collected now into one volume.
Icarus Games has Sidequest Issue 19, the December issue of a monthly rpg magazine. It has content for fifth edition, including a new winter focused sorcerer subclass, 11 new spells, and another part in a series of basic SRD monsters rebuilt to be more interesting.
Raging Swan Press has Portentous Dreams, in both 5th edition and OSR versions. It’s a handbook with tools on crafting interesting but vague dreams to use either as sources of prophecy and direction, or simply to confuse players.
Survive This!! Fantasy – Sourcebook 1: Expanded Races from Bloat Games includes 100+ new playable races for Survive This!! Fantasy. It includes a huge number of things, from variations on common groups like elves and gnomes, through various humanoid types like gnolls and kobolds, all the way up to more monstrous beings like trolls, hatchling dragons, medusa, and more.
Arachnid Stuff from Black Dog is an old school essentials rpg supplement that focuses on spiders. It includes 10 new giant spiders, with stats, habitat, and appearance, new spider themed items and weapons, treasures, and an arachnid character class.
SantaCrawl is an OSR styled adventure set in Santa’s Workshop, which has been sealed up. As dedicated shopping mall Santas, you must find out what happened.
OSRDAN Games has Divinities and Cults: Volume IV, for various OSR systems. It includes myth based resources for clerics, as well as details on various divinities from Finnish and Slavic sources, as well as various fell cults, additional rules, monsters, class variants, and more.
Aberrant Reflections from directsun is a puzzle dungeon for B/X compatible OSR systems, for levels 1-4. It does lean heavily on exploration and puzzle solving, and contains elements of body horror.
Snow Thank You from Starry Knight Press is a winter themed holiday adventure for levels 4-6, in both 5th edition and OSR style systems. It deals with a chaotic mage having been evicted from a village, getting angry, and summoning an elemental for revenge.
Eminence Luminous & Virgin Tenebrous is an OSR style adventure for Old School Essentials, levels 5-7, featuring a monastery with over 150 rooms over 8 levels, inspired by Slavic, dark fantasy themes.
Kortthalis Publishing has Encounter Critical III, the third edition of the Encounter Critical humorous, sci fi rpg. Now converted to use the Cha’alt campaign setting, this offering includes the rules, character creation, and an intro adventure, and combines elements of the original Encounter Critical with the OSR inspired Crimson Dragon Slayer d20 minisystem.
Orbital Vampire City from Dungeon Age Adventures is a dark fantasy sandbox, consisting of a city of undead people and monsters, in space! Suited for character levels from 5 to 10, it has players exploring the city and dealing with various factions to destroy, conquer, or escape the city, with over 40 encounter locations, 100+ original magic items, 40+ original monsters, and so forth.
Frog God Games has Rasmussen’s Planetarium, a system neutral guide for including more scientifically accurate elements in their science fiction. It’s a look at what sorts of lifeforms might evolve on a variety of different types of planets, moons, and objects, based on gravity similar elements to determine various parameters.
Cubicle 7 has Warhammer Age of Sigmar Soulbound: Era of the Beast, a supplement for Age of Sigmar Soulbound that follows the ongoing narrative, bringing the timeline into the Era of the Beast and the emergence of Kragnos. It includes the events that lead up to it, updates to the lore, details on the lands of Thondia, new archetypes, and more.
SHIVER Gothic: Disciples of Dregstone is an expansion for the SHIVER RPG, detailing the hidden city of Dregstone, which lies under the city of Spireholm. It includes the various lore of the city, how it fits into the Spireholm story, and more.
Fully Armored: The Battlelords Gear Manual Kickstarter edition, is a book of sci fi military gear for Battlelords of the 23rd Century. It includes new weapon systems, armored suits, armor options, and other equipment, a continuation of the timeline, optional combat rules, and so on.
And if you like sci fi gear books, there’s Central Supply Catalogue Update 2023 for Traveller, which contains everything from weapons to armor to miscellaneous gear suited for the Traveller system, including advanced computers, prototech, and more.
Shadows Over Sol: Dark Abyss is now available in print, and it a survival horror scenario for Shadows Over Sol: Science Fiction Horror Roleplaying. It is set on a research station near the bottom of the Mariana trench, near to a trove of abandoned technology.
Tri Tac Games has Incursion Player’s Guide 2022 Edition, an update of a classic sci fi space opera game, with all the rules to roll up a character and play them, including modernized character creation and streamlined d100 style rules. There will be a Game Moderators Guide scheduled for release in 2023.
Heist Roleplaying Game is a booklet for playing a criminal crew, undergoing heists in a city. It comes with a demo adventure.
Finally for this week there’s Picaresque Roman: A Requiem for Rogues – Game Master Guide, a supplement for GMs of that system, collecting various parts of the Core Rulebook for quick reference while running a game.
And now, onto crowdfunding campaigns. Remember that contributing to a crowdfunding campaign should be done only at your own risk. Doing so is no guarantee of even receiving a product. Mention here is not endorsement, but is for informational purposes only.
We’ll start with The Saltreach Isles: Oscana, part 1 of an archipelago setting for fifth edition. It will feature a core book, the first of six, with what you need to run your own campaign, with 21 cities, a new Coalescent Class, 24 new subclasses, over 50 monsters, and so forth.
Night Hunger will be a tabletop rpg zine compatible with Mork Borg and 5th edition, featuring 3 quests, various murky lore, items, and a new class, all with a sort of gothic horror theme, inspired by Eastern European lore and legends. It is to be the first of a number of zines, they hope, designed as part of a greater project: The Worlds Beyond the Wood.
Warehouse 23 is looking to fund Rose Labyrinth Roleplaying Game Adventure Set, for the Fantasy Trip and any hex based rpg. It’ll include an adventure seed as well as four places of rule and lore, as well as two mounted gameboards to detail the garden and paths, along with associated counters.
Adventures of Combat & Quest is to be an rpg with tactical combat and randomized loot. The kickstarter will be for an intro edition, that seeks to combine influences from procedural crawler CRPGs like Diablo, Torchlight, Path of Exile, and combine it with OSR style dungeon crawling.
Finally, FASA is looking to fund Interceptor supplements, to expand their game of star fighter combat, expanding upon the core setting with the Babylonian Union and the Interceptor Campaign Supplement, I guess less an RPG and more a tactical fighter game. Whatever.
