RPG News Roundup 12-17-2022

Hello, this is the RPG Crawler, and welcome once more to another RPG News Roundup, this time for December 17th, 2022, where each week I take a look back at the week in tabletop, computer, and console role-playing game news and bring you the highlights.
And with that, let’s move right on into Computer and Console Role-playing Game News. We’ll start with Atone: Heart of the Elder Tree, an upcoming puzzle/rhythm RPG. It has had a release date set now, and is slated for January 27th of 2023. It’ll be targeted for the PC, PS4, and Switch, and is set in a world abandoned by the gods. It has combat inspired by rhythm games.
The Last Spell is getting a full launch in first quarter of next year. It has been available in early access since last year. It looks like it’s going to be targeted for PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch. The Last Spell will see you playing various defenders, seeking to protect a group of mages meaning to banish all magic from the world in a last ditch effort to defend the remnants of humanity.
Gamedec, the cyberpunk detective RPG, is set to release on another platform. While it has been available on PC and Switch for a while now, the Definitive Edition will get a PS5 release early next year.
Tactical RPG Redemption Reapers was announced. Developed by Adglobe and published by Binary Haze, who put out Ender Lilies before, Redemption Reapers will be slated for PC, PS4, and Switch sometime in February of next year. It has you playing a mercenary group in a dark fantasy world.
Nihon Falcom made a couple announcements regarding the Ys series. Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, a remaster of Ys: The Oath in Felghana, itself a PSP remake of Ys III, is planned for release on the Switch in Japan in spring of next year. Further, Ys X: Nordics, the newest title in the Ys series, is hitting PS4, PS5, and Switch some time next year as well. Although neither of these mention a western release, it’s likely that one will follow at some point.
And for other remasters, Blaze Union is getting a remaster. Blaze Union: Story to Reach the Future is slated for release in Japan next year for Switch and mobile platforms. Again, no western release is slated, but hopefully one will follow at some point.
Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord IS getting a western release. It has been available in Japan for a few months now, and is slated for PC, Ps4, Ps5, and Switch in spring of next year in the west. It is set after Fairy Fencer F, and includes a new tactical combat system to add on to other systems from the series.
Astlibra Revision, which was released back in October on PC, is going to get a Switch release sometime next year. It looks like it will also get a DLC: The Cave of Phantom Mist, which will release on both platforms next year as well, which follows Rispadar’s daughter on her own mini adventure.
It looks like the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection is set to release on April 14th of next year, targeted for PC, PS4, and Switch. It is a collection that will release in two separate volumes, with Volume one covering Mega Man Battle Network 1, 2, and 3 both White and Blue versions, then Volume 2 will include four five and six. It looks like these are tactical RPGs? How have I never played these… might have to check them out.
The Tower – To the Bottom is getting a name change. It looks like it will now be called Arcana of Paradise -The Tower-, and has been delayed until April 20th. It’s still targeted for PC and Switch, and has you guiding a group of children down through a tower to find food and some rumored paradise at the bottom, with card based combat.
Then, as far as actual releases go, Immortals Fenyx Rising saw its release on steam. It is an action adventure RPG that has been available on other storefronts for a while now. It basically has you taking Fenyx out on a quest to save the Greek gods.
Blacktail saw its release. Is it an RPG proper? Or just an adventure game. Regardless, it has you playing a girl accused of witchcraft and cast out, in a sort of origin story for Baba Yaga.
Tactical RPG Broken Lines saw its release on more consoles. It has been available on PC and Switch for a few years now. You can now pick it up on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It is set during an alternate history World War 2.
Then, MOBA lite RPG HEROish saw a release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It looks like it will be getting a Switch release next month. It has you building decks of minions and such and using those to face off against other forces.
Strength & Virtue: Lord of Midchester saw its release. It is a 2.5D style JRPG where you manage a small town caught between two city states. You must rebuild your town, hire underlings, explore dungeons, and face off against your town’s foes.
Cygnus Enterprises saw its release into early access. It has you running an outpost on a faraway planet, and combines RPG and simulation elements as you battle creatures, gather resources, and build your base.
Nordic Ashes: Survivors of Ragnarok was released into early access as well. It is a Norse inspired action roguelike where you face off against hordes of creatures, unlocking ability trees, and facing bosses across the nine worlds.
River City Girls 2 saw its release, it’s one of those beat ‘em up RPGs in the River City series, and includes the potential for local or online co op.
And now, we’ll move onto tabletop gaming news. It looks like a couple versions of the new D&D adventure Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen saw release. The basic version has been available for a couple weeks now, but now there’s an alternate cover available, as well as a Deluxe edition that includes the DM screen and the Warriors of Krynn Board Game.
It looks like Pugmire is getting a new edition. The tabletop rpg where you play various dogs and related small animals, Realms of Pugmire 2nd edition will get a kickstarter when it looks ready for it, and is slated for some time in 2025.
Then, Dice Tale Games will be launching a kickstarter for Blood and Doom sometime in March of next year. It looks like it’ll be a sword and sorcery style rpg with a proprietary system, set in a doomed world.
On toward minor and pdf releases, Eldritch Osiris Games has Monday Monsters Volume 1: Undead Rising, available in pathfinder 1st and second edition, and 5th edition versions. It includes ten new creatures with an undead theme.
Guilds of Steel and Spirit is a 5th edition compatible supplement focused around the City of Wonders: Selovast. It includes background on the city, as well as three prominent guilds within it, each featuring its own agenda, NPCs, means of joining, seeds, and a feat.
Mobius Worlds has Beasts from the East for fifth edition. It includes a collection of monsters and entities from southeast Asia, statted out for fifth edition, with over 380 creatures, demons, divinities, humanoids, and monsters, as well as information on their legend, lore, and likely tactics. There’s also a few appropriate magic items.
Dalor’s Guide to Devils and Demons is available in print. It is a fifth edition supplement that includes various devils and demons, fourteen of each, as well as a series of cults and contracts, relics, a hunter’s guild and The Hunter class, four adventures, as well as an infernal realm called Isliath.
Fanatic Devotion from Off Grid RPG is a fifth edition module that includes a new paladin oath for undead paladins, a new fighter archetype: The Pious Knight, an entirely new class: the Penitent, with two subclasses, four items, and two new spells.
Under the Harvest Moon: Horror Options for Fifth Edition is also available in print. It is a horror sourcebook that includes world options such as festivals, a guild to join, an enemy cult, rules for parasites, various plot hooks, items, and lore, a new race, a few class archetypes, domain, and circle, as well as several creatures inspired by urban legend.
The Spellbinder’s Tome is a fifth edition supplement that focuses on adding Masteries to spells. They twist existing spells by modifying them in various ways, allowing for a bit of customization.
Bitter Feast from WatcherDM is a fifth edition adventure for 20th level characters. It does have a focus on roleplaying, and has the characters invited to a king’s feasthall, where they must travel via ship during the winter.
On Murky Seas is a fifth edition adventure featuring a fishing town, haven to various criminal organizations, who offer protection to the local civilians. Now, something has begun to prey on them, so the Kingfisher has put a bounty out on the perpetrators.
Adventure Suite: The Blood of the Musmahu is a fifth edition srd compatible adventure, with options for Basic Roleplaying as well, suited for levels 6-8. It involves the party being hired by a prince to destroy a death cult.
Cavern Crawl 1: Tree of Ballain is a 2nd level 5th edition adventure, that features elves that have been chased from their tree village by an evil entity, which must now be dealt with.
Along the Way: The Crown’s Fire from Underground Oracle Publishing is a one shot side quest for fifth edition. It is suited for fifth level characters, and follows the assassination of a Countess, whose advisor now is looking for a group of heroes to help return her to life.
Adventures Await has several more adventures put out for fifth edition. There’s The Price of Power, for third level characters. It features the once withering town of Gullport, where a pact with a being of the deep has brought prosperity back, but now it’s time to collect on the entity’s due. There Be Dragons is a 10th level adventure that deals with a white dragon that’s recently made a home in a nearby fortress. The Unquiet Dead is a first level adventure that features a crypt that contains the remains of a devil, which is now being resurrected.
Abbey of the Black Prince is a fifth level adventure that features a prince turned vampire by a dark pact. Frozen Temple of the Ice Priest is a third level adventure that deals with a cult who has accidentally unleashed a blizzard. Palace of the Fire Oracle is a third level adventure that focuses on a temple overtaken by a cult of elemental worshipping zealots. Forsaken Labyrinth of the Golden Baron is a third level adventure that deals with a mazelike tomb complex. Fire and Brimstone is a fifteenth level adventure involving an invasion from the realm of fire, and finally True Love Never Dies is a fifth level adventure focusing on a demon who fell in love with a human.
Moving onward, Cubicle 7 has Vault 5th edition: Uncharted Journeys, a set of detailed travel rules for fifth edition, meant to make travel across uncharted lands exciting and rewarding. It includes rules for travel, as well as for creating ancient ruins, and almost two thousand encounters across various regions, cities, jungles, haunted lands, etc.
Guardians of the Temple from Privateer Press is a supplement for the fifth edition Iron Kingdoms: Requiem based setting. It has new character options, equipment, and npc profiles for the Temple Flameguard.
Everyday Heroes from Evil Genius Games is an action focused RPG based on fifth edition mechanics in a modern day world, offering rules for modern day action scenes from car chases to firearms to computer hacking and so forth.
Judge Phil’s Zine of Goodies Volume 1 is a little zine with Dungeon Crawl Classics optional rules. It includes two classes, three new spells, five new weapons, and a super encounter.
The Honest and Plain Village of Scio is an OSR adventure and mini setting for levels 1 to 4, inspired by weird historical sources. It’s part of a sort of Mythic Northwest American Fantasy setting.
Blackmore: A Rock & Roll Adventure Module is a sort of 5th edition and Old School Essentials set of three connected adventures, inspired by the first three records of Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow, in zine format.
The Dread of Night from FableTop Productions is an apocalypse engine style game set in a land plagued by horrific beasts. It has you exploring a world in a new age of darkness, playing as a Hunter, set to face off against various monsters. It has inspiration from dark souls, berserk, and other dark fantasy media.
The Braunhaven Campaign Setting is an Old School Essentials setting that features a world recovering from a deadly plague. It includes lore, religion and economics, a calendar, details on the races, new monsters and plants, a two level dungeon, and so forth.
Forbidden Isle of the Nightstalkers is available in print, and is an OSR adventure for third level characters, dealing with a village that has some vampire spawn locked away in a hidden tomb, legacy of a vampire from centuries past.
Deities of the Lost Lands: Volume 1 – Gods of the Empires from Frog God Games is a system neutral supplement that covers more than forty gods of the Lost Lands campaign setting, with information on a number of gods found in other products from Frog God and Necromancer Games.
The Fettered Factory from Droidavoid is an OSR style adventure for Worlds Without Number, suited for 4th to 6th level characters, that deals with a map to a remote mountain region, long thought lost to history.
Hyrds of Midgard is an express frontier system set of rules and setting featuring a sort of Norse inspired view of a world to play in.
The Broken Cask Society is available in print, and is an apocalypse world engine style GM-less tabletop game focused around exploring various inns and taverns, finding out what is in each stop.
Chaosium has 7th Sea: Khitai core rulebook. A standalone tabletop game inspired by mythic fantastical Asia. Although it does have mechanics from 7th Sea, it is standalone, and expands on them with complete rules for creating characters from Samurai to Raiders, Kickboxers, and Sorcerers, new Dueling style rules, advantages, villains, and magic for Khitai.
Mongoose has Project Bayern for 2300AD setting, for Traveller. It provides a number of source materials, following the flight of the starship Bayern as it leaves human space to explore. It includes a mission profile, technical reference manual, various mission objectives, and the decks of the Bayern.
They also have Stranded for Traveller, available for free. It’s a remastered classic Traveller adventure, where the group is forced to eject from a crippled ship, only to be stranded on a glacier, far away from the nearest settlement.
Ulisses Spiele has a number of offerings for Fading Suns. There’s the play kit that includes various play mats and character sheets, New Frontiers Spacecraft Deckplans, which includes 12 spacecraft deckplans from St. Paulus Field Guide to Spacecraft, Imperial Dossier - Charioteers Guild that covers background on spacecraft life and what to expect. Vuldrok Space details the various starfaring cultures beyond the borders, specifically those within the Vuldrok Star-Nations. Imperial Dossier – Brother Battle covers the known worlds’ elite soldiers, St. Paulus’ Guide to Spacecraft is a field guide to spacecraft in the Society of St. Paulus, Hard Times on Hargard is a series of scenarios set on the conflicted planet of Hargard, and finally Lost Worlds is a set of nine ‘lost worlds’ style star systems cut off from the Known Worlds for a millennia.
Modiphius has Star Trek Adventures Mission Incident at Kraav III, a standalone adventure set between the Original Series and Next Generation eras, with the characters being the crew of a Klingon vessel.
Five Leagues from the Borderlands: Expansion 1 – The Ancient Land of Dust is an adventure expansion for the solo adventure wargame Five Leagues from the Borderlands. It includes new options for character creation, environment and region rules for The Dust, a new form of magic, details on The Desert Scouts, new settlements, encounters, and more.
Free League Publishing has Blade Runner RPG, Core Rulebook, which includes what is needed to play and run games as a Blade Runner in near future LA. There’s also the Starter Set, which has a condensed version of the rulebook, a case file Electric Dreams, four pregenerated characters, a map of LA in 2037, and various handouts and cards and such.
Finally, there’s Superpowered! From Stellagama Publishing. It’s a lightweight 2d6 style ruleset based on the Quantum Engine, that lets you play superheroes.
And now onto Crowdfunding Campaigns. Remember that contributing to a crowdfunding campaign should be done only at your own risk. Doing so is no guarantee of even receiving a product. Mention here is not an endorsement but is for informational purposes only.
And we will start with Dragons, Kings & Magical Things from DragonReach. It is to be a fifth edition campaign that focuses on the importance of making peace between multiple kingdoms, with the storyline based on that, although there is an option for shall we say, a morally alternative option.
Then there’s sands of Doom from MrRhexx. It looks to be a fifth edition campaign for levels 1 to 11, where a series of prophecies have foreseen the rise of an ancient evil, along with a series of plagues. As the prophecies begin to come true, the characters are thrust into the thick of things.
A Year of Adventure from SeaBreeze games will be a collection of twelve one shot fifth edition adventures, released once per month for the entire year of 2023.
Gallant Knight Games has Syma: An Incense & Iron Roleplaying Game. It looks like it will be a dark fantasy world, inspired by the history of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as various soulsborne games, focusing on a land torn between an oppressive church, a violent history, and magic.
Finally, there’s Black Sword Hack – Ultimate Edition, which looks to be a system inspired by The Black Hack and other old school dark fantasy, a rules lite game set in a realm inspired by sword and sorcery classics.
