House of Customs and Investigations

"Ah the House of Customs and Investigations." General Lauren Prudence set her head on her fist. She gazed out the window of her office, the third floor of the HQ of the Imperial Vennacti's 35th Regiment of the Martocrat's Household.   "You won't find another House or Department in the Empire riven by incompetence, inefficiency, corruption, or cowardice." She concluded, "I shall say no more."

Structure

The House is headed by the current Investigator General, Rutledge Shern.   Each House is commanded by the Head of its Branch. Stafford Polk for instance is the Head of the Minuba Branch. The Investigator General of the House maintains the agency, with all Branch Heads answering to the Investigator General.

Public Agenda

The House of Customs and Investigations keeps track of all shipments passing through the Empire. They determine the legality and authorization of all. They also hunt down illegal shipments, which include deliveries of Zerizite being smuggled out of state, weapons contraband, or dissident publications.   This is what leads the House to Investigating, carefully assessing whatever passes through their doors. They make every effort to restrict passage of illegal goods and then to track down those shipping said goods.

History

Among the different Darcassian Agencies, the House of Customs and Investigations does not swing in favor of either the Geneticist or Roboticist factions competing for the Martocrat's favor or for the chance of having one of their own become the Martocrat one day. Along with the Vennac Marshal in the East, the Investigator General of the House plays an important role in making sure one faction does not having sweeping control over the Empire or is directing the Empire's technological progress. This has led to accusations of bribes and sedition as Geneticists or Roboticists have tried to win the House's favor in supporting one at the expense of the other.   Initially, the House of Customs and Investigations was just dedicated to the business of trade and shipping. It was because of political machinations that the House had its powers expanded to investigation. Its agents range throughout the Empire, keeping an eye on firebrands, rabble rousers, and dissidents who would threaten Darcassian unity. The work of the House of Customs and Investigations has sent many, from Vennacti Corps Commanders, prominent nobles, and state politicians to the firing squads for attempting to subvert the Martocrat's rule or for pushing their own agenda.   Together with the Athelian Vennac Marshal in the East, the Investigator General of the House maintain the balance of power in the Empire. Both ranks answer directly to the Martocrat, ensuring that the Darcassian Secret Police and a large portion of its Army remain loyal to the Martocrat.
