Gilian urged his horse, Lightning, across the clearing. He’ll show Wurren that he was more than capable of handling a patrol by himself. He inhaled the fresh morning air and sighed a deep sigh of contentment. Life couldn’t be better. He was an apprentice to his brother and doing what he loved to do. Protect Asteri. What could go wrong? He saw Lightning’s ears twitch and he was instantly on the alert. There was the slightest rustle of bushes off to his right and Gilian knew something was wrong, but it was already too late. As he reached for his bow slung over his shoulder, a dozen arrows flew from the bushes on both sides of him. Lightning was hit several times and he reared, kicking violently. An arrow struck Gilian’s arm and he cried out in pain. The men charging from the bushes terrorized Gilian as he recognized them. Mevolen warriors.
