Currency
The common currency (minted by Dvergar) is called the nit, a silver coin. The bhar, an electrum coin, is worth 16 nits. The farhaeg, a gold coin, is worth 16 bhars. Grakis mints its own coinage and Dvergr moneylenders (stationed in any town worth the name, it can be assured) make a tidy profit at moneychanging. Copper and iron are common enough to be considered worthless as currency, though some areas mint coins from these metals. As a general rule, Dvergr moneylenders change these at a rate of 32 copper or iron coins (called halbnits) to a nit. In addition, a tarhaeg is equal to 16 farhaegs, but this unit of currency is only used in accounts and record-keeping of large transactions. A tarhaeg takes the form of a long gold bar, specially forged and stamped.
One gold farhaeg will feed, clothe, and house a peasant for a year in most cities. It is the approximate worth of a greatsword forged by a skilled smith.
One bhar can buy a cow, a bushel of grain, a week at Grindstone House, a woodsman's axe.
One nit can buy a chicken, a night at a cheap inn, a barrel, an eating-knife, nails.
