Scarlet Plague

The Scarlet Plague.
  The deadliest plague in history.
It was first recorded in the thirteen-hundreds in the distant Olgath continent, as having been transmitted from the bite of an infected rodent. During these times, rodents and other critters were unfortunately common across the world, and many cures for illnesses and other protections hadn't been invented or even discovered yet, meaning that much of the world was defenseless against any new strains that were brought into the population.
It was known to have spread across the continent throughout the coming years, even reaching as far as the Histian Empire and the cities of Ocane and Rosity, although this was as far as they made it due to the quarantining of the citizens after being infected with the illness. Due to their response to the sudden outbreak, they were credited with having saved the Empire at the time, even though their hygiene methods had advanced far enough to protect against basic illnesses and other strains with soaps and regular bathing and washing practices.
The Scarlet plague was known to have killed well over fifteen million people over the course of seventeen years, the longest known plague to have ever occupied the world in it's history, save for one other, the Spectral - or Crystal - Cough, which occupied the world for only twelve years. Both of these diseases claimed millions of lives in their time, but the Scarlet Plague is the most well-known of the two.
The first main feature of the disease is shortly after the victim has been bitten. They will feel the onset of a light cold or fever, and will often also experience stomach irritation within the first day of being infected. A cough and a fever usually follow and remain for the next three to four days, after which the body will begin to show obvious signs of infection. The skin will become darker, and the veins in the body will begin to fill with a pigment from the cells of the infection, giving them the color after which the disease was named, the color scarlet. This infection will often spread throughout the nervous system first, causing pins-and-needles in the hands and feet, before cutting off blood flow to certain smaller parts of the body. The ability of motor function usually follows, and if not treated, the muscles of the brain and the neck can begin to relax, causing inflamation, swelling and eventually, inevitably, death will follow. Due simply to the fact that a cure took five years to create even in the primitive times in which it took place, that time period was enough to take out more than half of the total death toll that was recorded when the disease finally disappeared.
The infection was able to take hold of anyone that received it, including men, women and children of all races and age groups, although older victims and those with underlying health issues were more susceptible to the disease. The mortality rate that was found was calculated to be sixty percent in older individuals, fifteen percent in younger individuals, twenty percent in middle-aged and teens, and the final five percent in those of all ages with underlying conditions.
The bacteria that caused the plague was discovered to be the bacteria Seniphalus Colilosis, which is still present in the world today and can still infect individuals who were not already given the vaccine, which in the modern world - anywhere with urgent care facilities and proper hospitals - is available to be given and can be administered at any time, and is especially a welcome addition to any regularly scheduled doctor's visit.
