Fender

"If out in the late hours of night you be, then with a bright lamp and a switch the Fenders you'll see."      The Fender is an almost invaluable profession, especially in countries like Opron, where their employees are well-paid for the nightly work that they performed dutifully.      The Fenders are a night-watch job of sorts.     They are employed by the city enforcements and are required to patrol through the city streets on predestined routes and directions mapped for them by their superiors before the night shift begins, and these routes consist of main streets and back streets, and although alleyways are not officially marked on their routes, the Fenders are encouraged to patrol these alleyways to check for outliers.     They were initially employed to wander the streets at night to guide drunken folk home from the bars and taverns in the late hours as well as watch for other lost souls in the streets, but as the years went by, they were considered to be the nightly police force in the towns and cities of the country, watching for any thieves or night wanders who are looking for trouble to brew in the late hours, away from the eyes of the daily routine. They keep thieves from entering shops and venues, and prevent others from getting lost or travelling to places they shouldn't during the night. An unofficial duty of the Fenders is also to watch out for working girls and streetwalkers also patrolling the streets. If they encounter one, it is common practice to investigate for a note or a permit that allows for the travel of these women to certain addresses, due to the fact that their primary hours of work are the same as the Fenders. If a woman is found without a note or permit, it is common practice to fine them and send them back to their venue to remove them from the streets as a method of discouraging the activity from taking place. The Fender is paid a fee of around thirty Lodarr a night for their work, and depending on the type of activity they have intercepted during their shift, they are often given a small bonus of between five to ten Lodarr, which can double depending on the amount of interactions that they experience during the night.     There are many stories about these legendary Fenders.     One such story tells of a female Fender named Kikah, a young woman in her twenties who had just recently joined the Fender forces after having been rejected from the local police a few days earlier. In those days, the police were primarily male, but the Fenders are known for employing female members to provide a sense of equality to their numbers. On this particular night, Kikah had been patrolling the outer city streets on her route until she came upon the hidden hideaway belonging to a small group of thieves who had been giving a good amount of trouble to the city in the recent days. To make a long story short, she found herself following their various trails to intercept and prevent various raids and other encounters from taking place between the thieves and the unsuspecting cityfolk, all within the hours of her shift through the night. If it hadn't been for Kikah, the city surely would have felt the ringing damage of the thieves well into the following days of her successful and legendary working shift that night. She went on to become a representative of the Fender groups, and even inspired other cities and their governments to enlist night watchers as Fenders to do the same for their people as Kikah had done for hers.      A Fender has a small arsenal of equipment.     They can be seen carrying with them a pole made of bronze or other light metal with a lantern attached to the end, which stands at roughly hundred-ninety-eight centimeters tall, usually taller than most Fenders. They are also given a large key ring to carry with them, which holds copies of all major locks in their section of the city, although these rings are held in the Fender headquarters and only given to a Fender who is patrolling a certain area of the city during the night. They are also equipped with gloves, a mask to cover their eyes, a top hat, body-length cloak and a pair of waterproof black boots, as well as the pencil and notebook needed to write out citations or fines to whomever they encounter on the streets during the night if such a document is necessary to hand out. They also carry with them a small pouch to be filled with coins which are received as fines from those individuals should they have the money to pay, otherwise they will be told to send the fine to the Fenders or the police to be received before they will be cut from any necessary payments.      Individuals must be mentally fit to perform the duties of a Fender, and it has been called "The Night-owl's dream. To wander the open world during the late hours and to have almost due freedom to see the world from the dark." by many of those who work the endless nightly shift.      The members of the Fender groups are paid daily at the end of every shift, which commonly begins in the late evening after the sun has set and ends after the sun has just began to rise over the horizon. Routes are typically written to match this time period to keep their exposure with the daily public to a minimum, although some nights are busier than others and can result in the Fenders encountering groups of commoners, which are not an offendable encounter between the public and the Fenders, and may usually result in a guided tour home by the Fender who finds them unless the group is otherwise expected or already on their way home.
