The Mortal Promise

In certain elvish-human communities, the elven spouse in a marriage might make a vow to end their life if their human companion dies of natural causes. In their eyes, this is akin to making them mortal, strengthening the bond of the pair. This pact is very taboo to almost every traditional elf, seen as a disrespect to their species. Another party that often disapproves is the human in the relationship. Further, the Mortal Promise is a dying practice as human and elven communities drift farther apart due to growing tensions from war, slavery, and racism. Only the Romeo and Juliet type will agree to this pact in the modern day.

History

When the elven people met humanity, they immediately grew fond of each other, sharing a special bond. This, of course, was not universal. One of the major downsides of their relationships was the vast difference in lifespans. This practice was rare when it began, and rarer yet now.
