Hel

"With no family left, this lonely, dead girl quietly rules over her vast realm of other dead things." -excerpt from Tales of the Gods, Vol. 1

Warden of the Dead

The youngest of all the gods and the last of Loki's monstrous Jötunn children, Hel is the ruler of Helheim, where she claims dominion over all souls that died ingloriously. Compared to her siblings, she is the only one that was granted responsibility and free reign of a realm, whereas Jormungandr was released into the World Ocean, and Fenrir was bound in unbreakable chains. Though Hel is the daughter of the vile trickster, Loki, she maintains a mostly neutral standing with the other gods, for her task of maintaining order in Helheim is immensely important.

In her avatar and religious artworks, Hel is portrayed as a small girl wrapped in a tattered grey dress. The right half of her body is pallid and dead looking, with long white hair, an empty eye socket, and skin taught to bone; but the left half is that of a beautiful young girl, with pale pink skin, straight black hair, and a piercing green eye. She wears a crown of blackened twigs, woven together about her head, and she is often depicted carrying a black dagger or a wooden staff with a torch at its top.

Tenets of Faith

Nothing stands above the justice of the grave.

It is in death that each of us give our last full measure, so that we may be seen for who we truly are and be judged.

Life is meaningless without death.

Death gives our lives meaning, having a finite end to our lives allows us to strive to spend the time we are given as best we can. Make the most of the time that you have.

The dead must be cared for, just like the living.

Our dead must be treated with the utmost respect, their bodies and souls show the respect that they earned in life.
