Lycanthropy, or The Wolf Curse, is both a magical and genetic condition. Casting the curse requires a lot of dark magical power as well as getting the intended target to drink a potion made from the blood of a wolf killed by moonlight. Once inflicted on a person, The Wolf Curse will be passed down through their bloodline indefinitely. There are rumors of many different cures for lycanthropy, but most of them are very vague and likely little more than wishful stories. The only verified means of lifting the curse is to have either the original caster or another of their own bloodline reverse it, but this is a highly difficult thing to obtain. Many lycanthropes are several generations removed from the original victim of the curse and do not know who it was that cursed them or how to find any members of their bloodline. 

Effects

The Wolf Curse turns those who are afflicted with it into involuntary shapeshifters, ruled by the light of the moon. If they are caught in the moonlight, they undergo a quick but painful transformation into a large wolf, often bearing some of the characteristics of their lycanthrope's human form. Most nights, they simply turn into a larger and stronger than average wolf that does not pose much threat to anyone unless provoked. However, under the full moon, these wolf forms are particularly powerful and monstrous. 
The transformation can be avoided only by the lycanthrope ensuring they are inside with all windows and doors shuttered at night. If they are caught in the moonlight to any degree, the transformation will be triggered. 
There is a lot of debate around how much of a lycanthrope's human mind is retained when they are in their wolf form. The lycanthropes themselves generally seem to have very hazy memories of their time as a wolf and cannot confirm or deny much of the speculation.
