Thaevur Sphere
Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)
Forged by the half-elven smith Emdren Thaevur, these dark, metallic spheres are roughly the size of a grapefruit and bear no trace of iron despite their colloquial name. Each sphere is engraved with a unique name or word in Thorass, the script of the Common Tongue.
Magical Absorption: While you hold the sphere, you can use an action to speak its engraved name, attuning yourself to it. Once attuned, the sphere floats silently near you, remaining within 5 feet at all times unless otherwise directed by thought.
The Thaevur Sphere serves as a magical barrier, intercepting and nullifying any spells cast towards or encompassing the attuned bearer within their area of effect. This includes both targeted spells and area effects. The sphere absorbs the magical energy harmlessly, potentially recharging itself in the process. However, it does not differentiate between harmful and beneficial spells; all spells are absorbed.
Capacity and Overload: The sphere can absorb magic indefinitely; however, if it intercepts a spell that exceeds its absorption capacity in a single instance, the sphere becomes overloaded. When overloaded, it immediately falls to the ground, becomes inert, and requires a long rest to regain its properties.
Active and Inactive States: The bearer can mentally command the sphere to become inactive or active as a bonus action. When inactive, spells will affect the bearer as normal. The sphere automatically reactivates if not commanded to remain inactive.
Transfer of Control: If the sphere is touched by another creature while active, and that creature speaks the engraved name, control of the sphere transfers to the new creature, requiring re-attunement.
Destruction: If a Thaevur Sphere is physically destroyed, it explodes in a burst of magical energy, dealing 3d6 force damage to all creatures within 10 feet. The sphere itself is then irrecoverably lost.
