Pilea

Pilea is the mother of Bulutas, a goliath woman. She is one of the few remaining goliaths of her tribe with the ability to wind-speak, an ancient tradition of communication with the spirits, the gods, the ancestors. Always being attracted to things that were different, she wed Bulutas' father, a human man, and brought him into the tribe. Only a short year after Bulutas was born, she heard a message on the wind: it warned of trouble to come, to the tribe, and to the world. It told her she must leave the mountain and seek help, seek answers. She took her revelation to Sagalo, the tribe's unofficial leader (all are equal in the tribe, non-hierarchical). He completely disregarded her vision, implying that she was making things up because of her intrinsic nature to seek the outside world. He also implied that she would be wrong to take her son from his people, his culture, and that if she chose to go, she should leave him behind.   The wind called, and she could not avoid it. Only a month after her discussion with Sagalo, she left Bulutas with his father and disappeared in the night. Heartbroken to leave her son, she did still feel confident that his life would be better in the safe and warm environment of the tribe than on whatever dangerous road lay ahead of her.   There were days on end she sobbed for missing her son, a postpartum woman with raging hormones. She spent some time traversing the desert, which meant many days on the edge of thirst and starvation. On these days, she was glad to have left him.   She spent some time with the wind-walkers, various tribes which literally follow the wind's direction as a nomadic people. She learned much of their ways but eventually found that though some wind-walkers were also wind-speakers, the culture was not what she needed to follow to achieve her goals.   Over twenty years later, she returns home at the will of the wind. She arrived, perfectly timed to find that Sagalo was announcing to the tribe his intentions to leave, to displace the entire tribe, as the wind had finally spoken loud enough for Sagalo and a few others to take notice of the impending danger.   Pilea had listened to the wind for so long, she was certain she was meant to stay. She urged her fellow villagers to stand their ground and defend their home. It is not clear yet whether the majority of the village will leave or stay.   Though Pilea does not know this, her son also has a budding ability in wind-speech.
