The light that burned the darkness

In a time long before this one, before the great city covered the world and the Guilds united us all, lived a small hawk. The hawk would fly over the world, observing all that lived below it and touching none of it. For the hawk, while small in body, was mighty in soul and feared what would become of the people it saw if it landed amongst them. So day after day, it flew across the world and watched as the people grew, learned and become strong.   One day, while it flew over the growing city, it saw something new amongst the people. A shadow walked alongside the people, but it was not from the people. It was a darkness that had attached to the people the hawk had watched over for centuries, and so the hawk grew concerned. But still fearful of the damage it would cause should it land, the hawk flew and it watched.   The people embraced the darkness, for the darkness showed the people truth, but it was a tainted truth. For whenever a person embraced the truth shown by the darkness, some of the darkness filled them as well. Soon the darkness had filled the world, and the darkness was the people and the people were of the darkness. The people worshiped the darkness, for they did not understand that the truth from the darkness was no longer whole. And the hawk watched as the world that it loved and cared for became corrupted.   The hawk knew that if it did nothing, that if it only flew and watched as it had always done, that the world it loved would be forever destroyed. But unable to land without hurting the world even more, the hawk choose to become light itself to burn away the darkness from the land. Flying into the sun, the hawk surrendered part of its great soul, and became light. Wherever its shadow would fall upon the land, a great light would consume the darkness, burning away the taint inside the people. But as the light burned away the darkness, more of the hawks soul was lost to the great light. For years the light that was the hawk, battled back the darkness, until the darkness had shrunk back into a small shadow. But the hawk was only a sliver of its former self, and feared that it would die before the shadow could be completely destroyed.   Issuing a loud shriek, the hawk dived for the shadow, striking the ground with the last of its essence. Summoning what remained of its soul, the hawk created a cage for the shadow, trapping it forever away from the people the hawk cared so much about. Locked away, the shadow was forced to watch as the people learned of its deception and cast away all knowledge of it. As for the hawk, it rejoined the sun, where every day it travels as light over the world, watching over the people it sacrificed so much for.
