Geography

Ayla is mainly located above the equator.

The far north of the continent is well into the polar zone, called the Winter Lands. Little plant life grows here though animals are abundant, especially aquatic varieties, as the region is comprised of small rocky islands entombed in thick sheets of glacial ice.

The Northeastern portion of Ayla lays on an extinct and eroded mountain range. The weather here is cool and wet, where mostly grasses and wooded copses of sturdy trees grow. The "bones" of the mountains, as the people call them, have left many excellent quarries and fertile soil where grains can be grown.

The North Central region is comprised of a vast grassland. The northern part of this grassland tends to be cold and marshy year-round, though the further south one goes and the closer one gets to the Sepolo River, the drier and more arid the land becomes.

The western border of the grassland is the Churanu Mountains. These high peaks are cold and snowy for most of the year, and hide many caves and valleys.

Farther still to the west is the Western Coast. This area is also cool year-round and has the second highest rainfall of any region on Ravenai. This is caused by the air currents coming off the Yushai Sea and ramming into the Churanu Mountain range.

The Churanu Mountains are bisected by the Davaa Pass, a large rift that allows for trade and travel Westward from the rest of Ayla. South of this pass, the climate becomes drier, warmer, and more arid. Due to currents from the ocean and from a Wellspring to the east in the Lessiyan forest, this part of Ayla is the driest on the planet. A network of rivers and oases provide resources necessary for life in an otherwise bleak place. This region is the southernmost point of Ayla.

East of the Churanu Mountains and south of the Sepolo River is an enormous depression. This depression is consumed by a vast, ancient forest, and the center of which lies a Wellspring. The trees are centuries, if not millenia, old, and are often so tall and large that they block much of the sun. Therefore, although it is warm and wet above the canopy, the forest floor is dry, cool, and dim most of the time. All manner of creatures, both fey and mortal, can be found there.

East of the forest is the Inland Sea. This is the hub of trade and life for much of the inland, and where the governing capital, the City of Unity, is located. To the northeast and east of the Sea is a mild climate with good farmland, especially for vinyards.

To the south and southeast, along the coast of the Asunh Sea, the land is rocky, though the climate is warm, almost tropical. Fishing here is plentiful year-round, as the sea is little more than a wide channel and protected from the worst weather by the landmasses on either side. It is also here that the earliest signs of human habitation can be found, around 50,000 years old.
