Foods of the Deadlands

What are the staple foods of the various regions of your world?     The primary foods for the people tend to be various simple sustenance foods, such as fish dishes and simple breads. Meat is often a delicacy, as wild game has become rare with the ever constant expansion of the Deadlands. There are, of course, exceptions.   Elves consider cannibalism of other races to be acceptable, and while they would never actively hunt a human, orc or dwarf, if one should happen to accidentally die then no one would shed a tear if the body appeared on the dinner menu. It's a case of waste-not want-not.   What do the poor people eat? What do the rich people eat?   While the primary staple of all classes is seafood, the rich tend to favor bigger and more ferocious prey. It is considered good form to serve shark at any party, and brined fermented fish are a common side to almost any meal. Pickled fruit is also often eaten, but is mostly a cultural anomaly of the human lands and considered disgusting by dwarves and elves.   Both the rich and the poor observe a high intake of seaweed, flat breads and root vegetables, but the poorest of the poor often are stuck with a leftover staple called Kurg, a super dense and crusty bread meant to preserve for long periods of time and to be eaten with a fish broth.   What foods are only reserved for special occasions?   Red meat is often reserved for festivals, and pigs are specially bred in human lands for this reason. Red meat is so rare that often then not Nobles will go long periods before seeing any, and half of what they do get is dried rather then fresh.   What are some foods that are unique to certain areas of your world?   Pickled fruit - often eaten by humans, but is mostly a cultural anomaly of the human lands and considered disgusting by dwarves and elves. Simply brined fruit.   Dragonscale - A human banquet draw, fish and grain are baked inside a pentagon shaped sea fruit called a Oxadi and served on a platter overlapping like scales.   Spahg - A elven bread baked containing the blood, brain and fat of a creature, often used for long journeys.   Sphig - A "poor" elven stew often given to beggars, prisoners and refugees, made from all the cleaned organs and marrow of a creature that could not be used elsewhere, and any semi-edible vegetable scraps. Often spiced with extremely hot peppers to remove the foul taste.   Warbread - a specialty bread made by dwarves, the crust is designed to be so hard a weapon is needed to crack it. The insides are fluffy and moist, but the crust is near inedible and often used as bowls.   Addlefish - A dwarven ceremonial dish, Addlefish is a fish that has been smoked for several days over the charcoal furnaces beneath the dwarven forges. Considered a delicacy by dwarves, repulsed by most for the extreme amount of "smokey" flavor.   How much of an average family's income goes to food?   About half. The exception are the dwarves, who function without a economic system.   Where is the food produced and how does it get to the consumers?   Most food is local to the town, with a few exceptions. The elven lands export pickled fruit for the northern human city states, and dwarves barter for almost all of their preserves from humans and elves.   How many meals are there and when are they eaten?   Commonly there are two meals, first in the morning and before bed. At the end of the day the night before, any scraps of fish or leftover uncooked vegetables are thrown in a pot and left to sit on the embers of that nights fire, turning into a nice cold broth by morning. This broth is skimmed from any fat(which is preserved for other uses), and served wither warm or cold with Kurg bread.   Once the broth is done, any leftover food from the previous night that has not spoiled is set out for people to pick at. Uncommonly, some people will take some of this and wrap it in a waxed cloth for a midday snack.   Dinner comes in two stages. The first is more like a meeting then dinner, where various small casks of pickled fruit, vegetables and fish are set out for people to snack on. The main drink for this meal is a weak wheat beer(although the dwarven lands are known to not water down this drink). This is a time to discus the daily events and relax while food cooks.   The second stage is the actual meal, varying widely from place to place. It is not uncommon to see different vegetables and meats wrapped in either a cabbage or seaweed, usually with some form of vegetable and a fermented sauce or rendered fat for flavor, as well as things like clams and shrimp. The remaining broth from the morning is often served warm as a drink. Rarely, a small glass of strong vegetable alcohol will be supplied with dinner.
