The Triple Realm of Azzagrat

Azzagrat spans the 45th, 46th and 47th layers of the Abyss. All three layers are connected by the River of Salt.

45th Layer

The 45th layer appears as a windswept steppe with a continual gray sky. All sounds are muted and fade into the background noise, even the most terrible screams. The landscape is remarkably unremarkable—details bled together until it is nearly impossible to tell where one was going or where one has been and travelers rarely remember anything of the lands and towns they have visited during their journeys, though people, creatures, and objects can be remembered as normal. The 45th layer is also home to the Viper Forest of Zrintor.

46th layer

The 46th layer shines with its own luminosity, projecting light and shadows upwards into the sky—the sky itself is dark and turns gray at night.

47th layer

The 47th layer glows under the light of a blue sun. Heat and cold have an unusual relationship on this plane and often act opposite to what is expected. Fire burns blue and purple and cold magic instead became hot. The demons here are hurt by fire but became immune to cold. The blue light of the sun makes it difficult to discern the features of an individual and so it is frequently used by visitors to help disguise themselves.

Zelatar

The great city of Zelatar spans and connected all three layers of the Triple Realm of Azzagrat. In it lies Graz'zt's Argent Palace. Graz'zt's maddening influence radiates outward in a tangible ripple, warping reality around him. Given enough time in a single location, Graz'zt can twist it with his madness. Graz'zt's palace is a den of ostentation and hedonism. It is adorned with finery and decorations so decadent that even the wealthiest of mortals would blush at the excess. Within Graz'zt's lairs, followers, thralls, and subjects alike are forced to slake Graz'zt's thirst for pageantry and pleasure.

Tourism

Azzagrat is probably the Abyssal layer that was most friendly to merchants. The plane is particularly attractive visitors looking for magical secrets and perverse forms of entertainment. Those looking to do business were sometimes given a retinue of cambions or tieflings to protect them during their visit. Those who intended to do harm to merchants within Azzagrat are reprimanded or eaten.   However, upon leaving the Triple Realm, a merchant is expected to offer a large portion of their profits to the guardian of the portal they used to exit.
