Food Supply

Ramshackle’s diet is limited by its location: its citizens primarily eat fish, edible seaweed, and other produce of the sea. Meat and vegetables are available, but are mostly imported goods with the exception of produce from the garden rafts.

Garden Rafts

Dotted throughout the sprawl of rafts and vessels that is Ramshackle are the garden rafts. These rafts are covered with a thick layer of fertilised earth in which gardeners employed by the city grow a variety of crops. The gardens are helped along by local spellcasters, who help overcome difficulties of climate and environment. Crops from the garden rafts are sold wholesale to local merchants who then sell the fruits and vegetables on to Ramshackle citizens.

Imported Food

Ramshackle imports a considerable amount of its food since it’s difficult if not impossible to produce most types of food locally. This includes: dairy; red and white meat; grains, beans, and legumes; fruits; and vegetables.

Because these foods are primarily imported, their freshness isn’t guaranteed. In order to ensure food freshness, a Ramshackle consumer spends twice as much on average than the normal price listed in the rules. Buying cheap food runs the real risk of food poisoning.

Cuisine

Ramshackle has multicultural roots. Its citizens emigrated from all over the world or are descended from people who arrived in previous generations. And, just like the people, foodstuffs and seasonings are imported from hundreds of far-flung realms. There are countless styles of food prepared in Ramshackle every day, and that’s before factoring in the myriad fusion cuisines Ramshackle chefs continue to experiment with.

Out of all these, Ramshackle’s most popular style of cooking is Yhambe. Yhambe food mixes a number of foodstuffs and cooking styles and is generally seasoned with pepper for spice. The cuisine’s dishes are primarily seafood based, using varities of fish, molluscs, and shellfish found locally to Ramshackle. Yhambe meals often involve beans and rice, which preserve well and are easy and cheap to import. Yhambe food bears a strong resemblance to our own world’s Creole cuisine.
