Aasimar

Aasimar are a rare type of humanoid. Their creation stems from an interaction with a celestial being somewhere deep in their lineage. These exceptionally beautiful beings had some sort of inheritance from the celestial beings that they were born by, whether it was an angel of some form, or one who was touched directly by a god. They often were dormant for generations, so it was exceptionally hard to place when an Aasimar bloodline entered someone’s lineage. They were generally taller than humans, lived upwards of 160 years, and had no form of society, instead blending in mostly with humans, half-orcs, and half-elves, where they were largely derided for their “strangeness.”

Basic Information

Anatomy

Aasimar have various distinct forms that separate them as individuals.
  • Celestial Aasimar: Those known as Celestial Aasimar begin to age into what is seen as a "traditional" Aasimar. Their skin turns bronze, golden, or silvered, and they begin to form characteristics similar to that of half-elves. Many will lose the pupils of their eyes, while others will gain strange celestial designs within their pupils. Their wings will always be most pronounced by this time. Many will begin to consider these Aasimar feylike or otherworldly, which is not inherently incorrect, as these beings are the closest descendent to those residents of the Celestial planes.
  • Cherubim Aasimar: Some Aasimar children cease aging around the age of 10 years for a great portion of their life, and are known as "Cherubim." They resemble adolescents both in body and mind; even as they continue to gain new experiences, they will always keep a playful and imaginative nature of a youth. These Cherubim are unique in that they are exceptionally capable of forgetting pains in their lives; they rarely suffer from mental woes, even if they have experienced great trauma, always keeping delightfully optimistic and playful outlooks upon life. All Cherubim eventually "age away" sometime after their 70th year, and will take the form of a beautiful Human with simplified/reduced Angelic Aasimar characteristics.
  • Mortal Aasimar: These Aasimar are often seen as the most "normal" by the standards of other races. Their morphology varies very little from their birth race; some never grow wings, although most do. Nevertheless, it would be very difficult to distinguish a Mortal Aasimar from another humanoid, as they retain very few characteristics of their Aasimari birth. The most common holdover of their race is beatific bodies that just seem unnaturally beautiful, and a longer lifespan than that of most, although these Aasimar frequently have the shortest lifespan of all their brethren. They tend to experience adolescence as a Cherubim, age faster than those into what seems to be a normal humanoid, and then eventually take a more Angelic form, before fading with old age around that of their 120th year.
  • Angelic Aasimar: Those known as Angelic began to take the form of traditional angels. All of their physical characteristics would become increasingly enhanced over time. Their physique will become exquisite, and they will be remarkably strong, without any physical training. Their beauty and hygiene will be immaculate, almost never seeming to dirty or become disheveled except through their own actions; they seem to produce beautiful odors from their person, and need not bathe like that of normal creatures. Their minds will age remarkably, picking up skills and talents quickly, and excelling in them; an 18 year old Aasimar can often resemble a 200 year-old Elf in intelligence and maturity. Angelic Aasimar will remain in this peak physical condition for their entire lives, only aging as their life begins to come to an end.
  • Vestigial Aasimar: The rarest of Aasimar, some can on occasion take a more ancient form as a part of their person. These Aasimar age incredibly slowly. They may appear to be Cherubim for a long time, but subtle features of their aging will persist, making them a rarity even among Aasimar. In truth, these Aasimar carry a lineage between ancient Celestials and The Paragons cross-breeding many eons ago. They either take the form of Avariel, with exceptionally pronounced wings, or for those who are less humanoid, will begin to have their arms evolve into wings themselves. Some Vestigal Aasimar grow multiple sets of wings, further differentiating them from any creature known today.

Biological Traits

Aasimar physique varies quite dramatically between the type of Aasimar.
  • Celestial Aasimar tend to be taller than humans, with unique skin, hair, and eyes. They tend to be taller than humans, but rarely grow taller than 6'6".
  • Cherubim Aasimar tend to be short, resembling children between the ages of 8-15. This can mean their heights, weights, and appearances can vary dramatically by what stage of their life they are at. A simple average would have most at the heights of 4'3" - 5'4" until later in life, with a great variety on the outer edges of those averages. Their weights are generally 100 lbs. or less, with again a great amount of variability.
  • Mortal Aasimar tend to take the physical characteristics of their parent race, giving an extreme amount of diversity. Regardless of their home race, almost all Mortal Aasimar have a lighter skin tone; an Aasimar of orcish descent is likely to have pale green skin, while a mortal Aasimar born of a human with dark skin will have naturally ochre or russet skin.
  • Angelic Aasimar tend to be taller, heavier-set, and have more distinct physical characteristics. Most Angelic Aasimar will between 5'6" - 7'2", very muscular, and weighing between 150-220 lbs. Most distinct are the colors of their physical characteristics, as they always take the most extreme form available. An Angelic Aasimar with blonde hair will have nearly platinum blonde hair; one with black hair will have jet black hair. One with white skin will appear almost porcelain, while one with black skin will appear deep umber. All Angelic Aasimar also have a distinct glow upon their person, unique to the individual, ranging from gold, brass, cobalt, to citrine.
  • Vestigial Aasimar are most pronounced in their appearance due to their inhumanoid qualities. Most Vestigial Aasimar have distinct plumages upon their feathers and wings, while others may show other characteristics seen as strange, such as scales or feathers growing out of the skin.  They also have stout and lighter builds, between 5'0" - 5'7" in height, with weights on average around 100lbs, and rarely heavier-set.

Genetics and Reproduction

The creation of an Aasimar child is most easily done through direct interactions between celestials capable of mating, most frequently between two Aasimar themselves. Aasimar do not breed well, however, as the chances of two Aasimar having a child are generally quite low.   More commonly, Aasimar are the result of Humanoid offspring. They can come from any Humanoid, but are most frequent from Human pairings (to a percentile of 95%). Aasimar have no direct lineage, but rather, a latent chance of appearing. There is no known method to predict how this comes about; it seems to be random, or decided by the gods. An increase of this chance can occur if a Human woman mates with an Aasimar male or other celestial being, but this is still not a guarantee. Female Aasimar mating with male Humanoids only have a slightly increased chance of bearing an Aasimar child, to the percentile of around half.   However, any offspring of an Aasimar carries with it the potential for anyone in their lineage to bear an Aasimari child at some point in the distant future.   There are more exceptions than opportunities to birthing an Aasimar, which aids in making them incredibly rare. Dragons, even those of celestial heritage, never birth Aasimar. Similarly, Fiends never birth Aasimar; any of infernal or abyssal blood who consort with an Aasimar will always produce a Tiefling. Genasi and Gith can give birth to Aasimar, but only through the pairing of a Genasi or Gith and Aasimar; upon birth, the Aasimar parent, regardless of being the father or mother, will die.

Growth Rate & Stages

Aasimar typically age similarly to that of humans. Some will be born as if children with a radiant glow, and with fantastic health as infants; others will have immediately distinct Aasimari characteristics, like unique eye, skin, and hair tones, especially those that do not reflect the parents of the child. Some Aasimari are born with their wings, while others have them grow upon their back within the first few years.   Aasimar aging slows around their 10th year compared to that of humans. They maintain a youthful figure and complexion until their mid 20s-40s. It is at this age moving forward that Aasimar always grow into what they will look like for the majority of their life, with great disparity between individuals.
