Netjersenedj, Nineteenth King of Neferuaten

Written by skeleton-adventurer

Netjersenedj was the youngest child of 8. Unlikely to inherit the throne, he spent all his time in religious contemplation. When a plague wiped out half the population of the kingdom and his entire family, he believed that he had been spared because of his devotion to the Aten. (Most likely he survived because he spent so little time around other humans, reducing the chances of infection.)
Starting with the reign of his great-grandmother, Taheri, the kingdom had been experiencing a period of great religious freedom. All gods and traditions were welcome in Neferuaten and the people were happy. Netjersenedj believed that the plague was a punishment for straying from the Aten. He instituted laws against worship of other gods, and harsh punishments for breaking them. These laws lasted for centuries, until the reign of Queen Nebuhekau (Earth years 890-899 AD), who lifted almost all of them during the last year of her reign.
Netjersenedj ruled for thirteen years (Earth years 888-875 BC) before dying, perhaps ironically, of a flu.
