Tundra Moss

Unless playing a Tundra Elf or Frontiers-person, it's unlikely they will have ever encountered this moss before. However a Druid or other nature-focused character could make a Survival Check to determine the main features of the plant.
A plentiful moss which grows across the surface of the Northern Tundras beyond Frosts Edge. It's a thick, hardy moss with small reddish buds in the winter which bloom into edible flowers in the summer.   The moss is rootless and grows entirely low on the surface of the tundra but is also partly aquatic and can quite happily exist beneath the surface of ice or water. making it extremely hardy during both the winter and summer months, capable of surviving in the harsh elements.   The moss itself is mostly edible, if not particularly nutritious or tasty, and a staple part of the life cycle for the local fauna, being a staple part of the winter diet of birds and smaller land mammals. It's also a mainstay of the local Tundra Elf tribes who use the moss as a supplemental food source and as a utility item. Dried it can make for suitable kindling for fires, and when combined with certain herbs forms part of their dreamwalking rituals. It is also often used as a form of insulation when setting up temporary snow shelters and camps, and makes for an ideal natural bedding, being clear of any insects or other parasites that wouldn't survive in the colder climate.   The moss is of use to players as well and can also be collected and used by PCs. If they spend an hour collecting Moss they can gather enough to replace 2 rations-worth of nutrition. However, only the moss itself is edible, and attempting to eat the flowers or buds will require the consumer to make a CON Saving THrow (DC 12) or become poisoned for the next 24 hours. Might want to allow for the opportunity to observe the local bird-life pecking away at the roots but avoiding the actual flowering bulbs with a Perception or Investigation check.
Conservation Status
