Post-war Trauma

The Great War carried a terrible toll on both victims and survivors. Soldiers and civilian alike. While life has, on the surface, returned to a state of relative normality for both sides, scratching the surface a little reveals a wide array of PTSD, Trauma and Grief at the almost inconceivable loss of life during the conflict.   There are few living today in the world that have not suffered some loss or trauma from the events of the last few years. Soldiers returned from the front, broken and haunted by the horrors of trench warfare, terrible experimental magics and weapons or war, and a loss of life never before witnessed by the world. Even those with the internal fortitude to carry on with their lives often wake up screaming in the night, the whistle of falling wildmagic mortars echoing in their memories.   Civilians, too, feel similar trauma. It was rare that the war would politely contain itself on the battlefield. Hundreds of small villages and settlements were wiped off the map as forces on both sides of the conflict would take, lose and retake strategic locations, or target the supplies and infrastructure of the enemy.   Ironically, this trauma is one of the main things which has brought the two sides together, with new songs and stories that celebrate the tragedy and heroism of the doomed foot soldiers and front-line troops who gave their lives in the name of a seemingly stupid and pointless war. The Great War is probably the primary source of inspiration for a new generation of poets, bards and storytellers, all eager to make sure they play their part in making sure this never happens again.   It produces anger, too. Several factions focused on the removal (legal or otherwise) of officials, generals and anyone they deem responsible for the horrors of the Great War, up to and including the Queen of the United Kingdoms herself. Dwarves in particular - sought after for their technical expertise and general battle-hardiness - sustained colossal losses to the point where it seems unlikely many of their communities will survive, and there are rumblings of rebellion and discontent amongst the general meta-human populace, most of whom believe this war would never have happened if humans were not the ones in charge of everything.
