The Covenant of Shade

There is only one acceptable faith in the Shrouded Theocracy. All others are divined to be the work of The Strangers, and purged with extreme prejudice.   The followers of the Covenant of Shade are called 'The Shaden' or 'Shaden'. However, within the territory of the Shrouded Theocracy, people are assumed to be either Shaden or targets for 'enforcement'.   The Theocracy is structured around Channeler and six Paragons. There is one Paragon for each member of the Hexaline Covenant. Each Paragon has six Hexaline Knights. Each Hexknight officially commands a squad of six other knights. This grouping of one plus six echoes the supreme deity (now The Remnant) and her six Hexaline children.

History

Origin:

An unknowable length of time ago, the universe was in a state of perpetual disorder. Within this chaos, three deities were born from chaos by pure chance. They did not will themselves into existence, nor did any other force make this happen. One was stronger than the other two. This was Apex, The Supreme One.   The inferior twin deities, The Strangers, did not take well to Apex setting about constructing order from this unformed chaos. Each made it their mission to scatter and pervert the orderly world Apex had already set about building. All the evils in the world found their place among The Strangers.   When Apex created humans to live in peace on the planets of the void, The Strangers created the other sentient species. These inhuman wretches weren't true evil, for they did not choose their deviant genesis, but they stood against the holy order of Apex. It is known that Apex intended for humanity to rule above all. Therefore, only through subservience can the other species hope to maintain pure Soul Tethers. If The Stranger of Light: Nilume is to be believed, he created some of the species as part of a competition with Apex. If The Stranger of Truth: Metia is to be believed, his brother created those species because he looked up to Apex, and he wanted to contribute.   Apex was the wisest of the deities, and she knew that she could not make enough progress when all it took was one dissolute action to disrupt years of planning and maintenance of her holy work creating order. Apex had a plan. She would fracture herself into six specialized parts, joined by a binding Covenant of Shade. This would allow for the work of creating holy order to continue, and it would simultaneously guard against the actions of The Strangers. The Remnant, the spiritual husk of her magnificent being, conveys Apex’s directives through the Covenant of Shade to guide these six lesser deities whom she gave birth to. They are known as The Hexaline. It is the responsibility of her human creations to adhere to that will and obey her six Hexaline children.   When Apex fractured herself to fulfill her objective, each of he Strangers reacted differently to the change. The Stranger of Light was angered by this act, and now seeks to hinder the actions of the Hexaline deities, killing them until one remains to be forced to consume the defeated, in the hopes that it will somehow bring Apex back. Though he resented her, The Stranger of Light looked up to Apex. He admired her strength. In his eyes, these six lesser gods are insults to her Remnant. The Stranger of Truth mourns the loss of Apex as well, but claims to want peace between the eight living gods. He labors to impart forbidden knowledge on the Hexaline, believing that coming to an understanding between the two sides is the best path forward.
