Slavery

It is both a common way of punishment among the primitive and the civilized alike. When someone causes damage to another's property and is unable to pay, then the compensation must be made in the form of servitude until the offender makes up for the crime.   In many of the city-states, the hereditary debt is a common practice, which means that should the slave's life would end before he could complete his duties, his place must be taken by his closest relative to continue, and hopefully, end the term. Primitives find this to be shameful, as far as they are concerned, a dead man no longer owes anything to anyone.   Laws and customs regarding slaves and the matter of slave ownership are different in almost every legal system around Progonos. but the most well-detailed ones are those that are developed by the aeneians, the xondosi, the wastelanders, the kheonites, and the arioni.

As their name implies, House slaves are indebted to another member of the community and must work around their household, performing menial tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, tending to the animals, escorting family members, running errands and the such. As they are originally parts of society, House slaves are to be treated well by their new owners, they must be provided with food, shelter, protection, and their progress to complete their punishment. It is a legal issue, after all, chieftains and state officials alike want to get over with it just like with any other. The moment someone hurts, or disables a House slave in any way, they may be charged as well, especially in Xondos and Aaru, where house slaves are counted as the property of the ruling body.   Worker slaves are those who have caused damage to the whole community or directly to the governing body. These, along with criminals, and prisoners of war are put to hard manual labour, like farming, mining, construction work, fighting for their lives and for the people's entertainment in the Fighting Pits, frontier guard duty, delving into places that would be dangerous to people who actually worth something, and so on. These slaves are considered to be expendable material. Given the weight of their crimes, they are provided only the bare minimum that prevents them from passing away before due time, but in punishment, the slave-keepers are allowed to be as charitable as they wish to be.

Bought slaves actually represent an overlay between the other two, although a lot more common in the Island Kingdoms. These people have not become slaves according to any law, it was forced upon them by slave-hunters. It is a flowering business by all means. Once they are sold, they can become House slaves or Worker slaves, depending on their capabilities, the major difference is that as they are being outsiders, local slave laws do not apply for them. They are not protected by them, their term as a slave is endless unless their owner frees them, and should they come to have a family in the while, their descendants will be regarded as slaves.
