Alcairus Dartois

Early Life

Alcairus Dartois was born in Matre, the capital city of the High Plains. From a young age, Alcairus was of great intellect. His teachers within the clergy were constantly astonished by his performances when it came to history, writing, and mathematics. At the young age of ten, Dartois was referred to as a Brother, an honor usually bestowed to those three to five years older than him. Dartois was, however, known for his arrogance and condescending attitude towards his peers and mentors. Despite being disciplined for his actions, he grew into a conceited member of the clergy that was assumed to join the high clerics at the incredibly young age of fifteen. Many of his mentors, however, purposefully held him back due to his poor attitude towards his elders, constantly reprimanding and reminding him to respect those that are older than him.
"Oh yes, Alcairius was very much an egotistical bugger, but behind that facade was a great lonliness; a particular sadness that clouded his early life"
- Hieronymus, Philosopher
At sixteen, Dartois decided to secretly practice the arts as he believed it to be far more interesting than definite answers to age-old questions. In solitude, he would paint, write poetry, and teach himself to play the flute. One day a peer, Bernard Ashdon, had finally discovered the source of the flute playing. Secretly intruding, Ashdon silently listened and observed Dartois practicing the arts. That was until Ashdon was feeling particularly brave one day and began playing his lute in front of Dartois. Wordlessly, the two formed a bond over the love of music that was all but repressed in the clergy.    Despite Brothers and Sisters of the Andryte faith being forbidden from having romantic relationships, Ashdon and Dartois did not care. Years would pass and Ashdon went on to teach mathematics within the city whilst Dartois endlessly went through the many rituals that would lead him into wearing the robes of a high cleric. Their quiet love affair, however, was found out by one of the high clerics who observed Dartois acting strangely during a ritual. Unbeknownst to Dartois, the cleric followed him home and witnessed the two's romantic rendezvous. Dartois, aged twenty and Ashdon, aged nineteen, were forced to either face prison time or exile for their violation of the Andryte code. As such, they both fled southwest where they would create one of the largest cities in the High Plains.

Accomplishments

Dartois and Ashdon fled to a small river town to the southwest. At the time, it had no name but it had much promise. The river that ran through the place was large and full of fish, perfect for commerce and sustaining large amounts of life. With their guidance and aid over a score of years, the small town would become the second largest city in the entire continent. See Alcair for more details.   Dartois was seen as a kind leader who often showed kindness through the patronage of the arts. Many of his accomplishments include affordable tutelage, clean streets, professional guards trained by former knights, and a focus on creating enough homes for everyone to have a sanctuary away from the Andryte faith.

Death

Dartois would come to die at the age of seventy-eight of natural causes. Ashdon died within the same year at seventy-seven. Their deaths would lead to the entire city of Alcair entering a stage of mourning for nearly a month before a council came together and decided upon new leadership based on what the two had left behind.
