Takes place on a modern day alternate Earth where magic exists as well as a variety of other intelligent races and mythological monsters. Mana is a high energy fluid that has replaced oil and gas and, to an extent, electricity as well. It can be mined up, but it is also produced in smaller amounts by living creatures, plants, and animals.   Where the Atlantic Ocean is instead sprawls the Deep Woods, which tapers off in the south along the tip of South America, sharing a coast with Africa up until about the border of Angola and Namibia. In the north, the Woods envelop Greenland and Iceland, tapering off along the northern coast of Russia.   The topography of the Deep Woods is the same as that of the Atlantic Ocean. The canopies of the trees grow level with each other, roughly fifty feet above sea level, even though the heights of the trees vary with the underlying hills and valleys. They become exceptionally tall in the trenches.   The top 200 feet of the woods are filled with thick fog that teems with life. Atop this dense layer are the Fog Rivers, an interconnected network of waterways that connect the continents, allowing for exploration without the risk of venturing beneath the fog. It’s dangerous beneath the fog because many creatures of the Deep Woods consider surface flesh to be delectable and will attack.   Surface dwellers tend to go mad if they spend too much time in the Deep Woods and vice verse. This…hasn’t stopped humans from living in the Deep Woods, though. Because you know humans.   All ocean bound islands are floating islands, both over the ocean and the Woods. They are often places where prestigious magical boarding schools are built. These schools are also used to collect student mana, which makes these schools a bit more accessible for people from lower classes as it helps pay expenses.
