Riftforged

Not much is known about the riftforged. All that is known is that the people of Aevrela were not aware of the existence of riftforged until after the 200-year void, commonly known as the Rift. Everyone believes that somehow the riftforged are related to what happened during the Rift, but exactly how remains unknown.    The following questions are still unanswered about the riftforged:
  • Who built the riftforged?
  • Were they built for defensive or offensive purposes?
  • What side were they fighting for?
Like everyone else, the riftorged don’t have any recollection of what happened during the Rift, they too don't know who created them and for what purpose.    What is known about the riftforged is that most of the riftforged died during the Rift. Broken and destroyed parts of riftforged are scatted throughout the continent of Aevrela. Only a few are functioning to this day, so it is quite a rarity to be seen. During archeological digs, sometimes a warforged is found dormant, but still functioning, Millie is one of the most well known examples of a functioning riftforged, drawing researchers to the Edge and the Worlds End Inn.    Some mages and investigators have tried to reassemble recovered parts of riftforged, trying to bring one back to life or at least figure out how they were made. To this day they have been unsuccessful at recreating one of these creatures.   The general population are cautiously curious about riftforged; like wanting to pet a random dog on the street – not knowing if it will bite or be friendly. The functioning riftforged in Aevrela have all shown to be friendly and non-hostile (unless provoked), but there are some that believe that the Rift is their fault and are openly hostile towards the riftforged.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Based on the research that has been conducted so far, Riftforged appear to have been built by a combination of organic and inorganic material. Their metal carapace protects what appears to have been tubing, vein-like networks, filled with some sort of alchemical fluids that gave the beings life. The eyes are made of some sort of magically enchanted crystal or gemstone.

Subspecies

Riftforged Skirmisher

First, is what we have called the riftforged "Skirmisher". They are riftforged with a leaner build and appear to be designed with speed in mind. These models have red markings on them or sometimes have red metal plates or even at times red fabric that are believed to help indicate their group.   Many of the Skirmisher models that have been recovered were located near battlefields found during archeological digs, although not as prevalent as the Juggernaut builds. Most of the Skirmisher models that have been found show evidence that they might have been archers - their forearms often having a retractable longbow, supporting a theory that these might have been used for combat purposes.

Riftforged Juggernaut

Second, is the riftforged "Juggernauts". These builds are much hardier than the other two known builds and we believe that they were likely designed for combat. These tend to have blue markings or be made entirely of blue steel metal.    The majority of the Juggernaut models that have been recovered show evidence of combat. Many of these larger builds have scratches, puncture marks, and dents upon their armor consistent with the blows of weapons and arrows, supporting the theory that they were largely a front line combat model. Like the Skirmisher models, a large number of these Juggernaut models are found in archeological digs near the Rift, in areas which appear to be battlefields.

Riftforged Envoy

The last model that we are aware of is what we are calling the "Envoy" riftforged. The "Envoy" models appear to be the catch-all of the riftforged. All marked with a gold or yellow, they aren't as bulky as the Juggernaut riftforged, but not as lean as the "Skirmishers". We have not retrieved as many of these "Envoy" models as the Skirmisher or Juggernaut models and most of those that have been recovered are not near the middle of the battlefield archeological digs and tend to be found independent of all other evidence. The exact function or purpose of these models is still not clear, but it is assumed to be some sort of support model to the Juggernaut and Skirmisher models.

Biological Traits

They appear to require a type of rest like any other creature although it seems to be more of a stasis than complete sleep.

Also, healing magic appears to work on them like creatures with flesh wounds. A simple cure wounds will heal a scratch in their metal armor.

Somehow they can even alter their shape after remaining in stasis for a period of time. They have different 'modes' of a sort, where they can increase their defensive capabilities as needed.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

The forehead of each recovered riftforged has a unique arcane sigil. It is currently assumed to be some sort of identifying characteristic or naming system.

Gender Ideals

The riftforged to not appear to have distinct genders. Which correlates with previous research conducted on the remains found, that the riftforged do no appear to reproduce in traditional manners as other humanoid species, if they are able to reproduce at all.
