The Horizon Chaser
The Horizon Chaser is a state of the art airship constructed by the Synthesis Corporation and primarily designed by its chief scientist and leader, Nori. It utilizes an experimental method of navigation whereby the Z-Energy of the Z-Crystal is manipulated with a ‘cage’ of pipes doming the ship, which allows greater freedom of movement in the air. As a result, it is smaller than a typical airship, and maintenance costs are increased because of additional wear on the hull.
As they require a flying-type Z-Crystal to power their flight mechanisms, airships are very rare, and less than one hundred have been built. As such, almost all airships are constructed by city-states. Their primary purpose is for long-distance cargo and pokemon transport. City-states have been known to commission large corporations to assist with the enormous building costs, and so they may sometimes be co-owned. The Horizon Chaser is the exclusive property of Synthesis Corp, making it presently unique.
Airships generally house their Z-Crystals as close to the center of the ship as possible, with the top exposed to the sky. Flying-type Z-Crystals are unique in that they do not lose strength when moved from their original location, as long as they are airborne. They naturally produce lift when airborne; this property is what is exploited by an airship to fly. Airships use steel pipes to evenly distribute this energy across the hull, giving airships their distinctive horizontal striping.
Although flying-type Z-Crystals will provide their own lift when exposed to the sky, navigation is more difficult. The pilot controls the distribution of Z-Energy on the ship. Forward navigation is assisted through the use of electrically-powered turbines on either side of the ship, necessitating at least one electric-type crew member or sufficient battery power. Wings can be deployed to reduce energy usage. Directional navigation is accomplished by directing Z-Energy throughout the hull by opening or closing ‘doors’ in the Z-piping, capturing Z-Energy in only a specific portion of the ship, tilting it in the desired direction.
The Horizon Chaser is equipped with an innovation that gives the pilot greater control over the position of the ship. A ‘capture ring’ is situated above the skyport, where the Z-Crystal normally discharges most of its energy into the sky. A new method developed by Synthesis Corporation allows this normally wasted Z-Energy to be utilized through the application of synthetic Z-Crystals.
Synthetic Z-Crystals will not produce a seemingly infinite amount of energy, as natural ones will. The larger the synthetic Z-Crystal, the less energy they contain. Z-Energy is drawn to other sources of the same type, a property which can be exploited. By inserting tiny shards of synthetic Z-Crystals into the opening of Z-pipes, the otherwise wasted energy being discharged into the sky is recaptured and propagated into a ‘pipe cage’ that encases the airship in a dome shape.
An expert pilot can direct this Z-Energy as normal by closing doors to the opening of the Z-pipes attached to the capture ring. The vertical orientation of the Z-piping gives the pilot greater directional control. The more often the pipe cage is used, however, the more often the synthetic Z-Crystals must be replaced, which is costly and time-consuming.
Besides these innovations, The Horizon Chaser is fully outfitted for long-term travel, and contains enough space to comfortably house at least 20 crew members in individual rooms on the bottom deck. On either side of the ship are a kitchen/dining area and storage respectively. The middle deck holds the Z-Crystal control room/laboratory.
