Valdathans

The nation of Valdath has long been in conflict with its neighbors. Many centuries ago, the Vald empire covered roughly twelve times its current territorial holdings, and like happens with so many empires on so many worlds, this eventually became unsustainable. Enemies from without and ambitious corruption from within wore away at the empire's holdings bit by bit.
Its people, however, never changed.
Valdathans, despite being a mix of humans, several varieties of dragonborn, halflings, tielfings, high elves, hill dwarves, and rock gnomes, all consider themselves to be one ethnicity with a common set of cultural customs, ideals, and practices. Clothing choices are similar as well.
They are a warlike people, obsessed with reclaiming their "lost" territory and restoring the glory of their empire. Valdathan children of all social strata are taught to fight as part of their primary education, and adults are all expected to serve in the nation's military for two years in their early twenties. Shirking this service for any reason (including disability) is seen as a cause for shame.

Major language groups and dialects

Valdathans speak the common tongue and also learn Valdic as part of their schooling.

Shared customary codes and values

Valdathans believe in honor - which is achieved through a mix of excellence in whatever you profession is and obedience to the traditions of Valdath and the dictates of the state.
Interestingly, the excellence means more than the "duty and tradition" part. A truly accomplished criminal is seen as more respectable than a slovenly laborer.
They believe in the protection and advancement of the state as well.

Common Dress code

Valdathan fashion maintains traditional western modesty and is cut to make the wearer look formidable. Lines emphasize the shoulders and fashion often has a whiff of the military to it with many pieces looking a little like armor, uniforms, or both.

Beauty Ideals

Muscle. The Valdathans value muscle and strength on both sexes.

Gender Ideals

Valdath is very egalitarian with regard to gender. Excellence is what is important.

Courtship Ideals

The initiating partner in a relationship is seen as the more honorable, so Valdathans tend to be bold in matters of love.

Relationship Ideals

The valdathan marriage is intended to be a partnership that feeds the excellence of both parties involved. They are strictly monogamous, but divorce is common if a partner is seen to not be contributing.
