Karkovian Sayings

Walk the Hangman: Delivering bad news. "I'm sorry to walk the hangman, but the south field has been eaten by locusts." Origin: in early Karkovan history, the hangman would be escorted to the gallows after the condemned by a group of guards.   Demon's Truth: Bald-faced lie. This is usually delivered sarcastically or scornfully. "Yeah, sure you saw a flying owlbear. Right proper demon's truth, that is."   Seamster's Needle: Rapier or other fencing sword. This is usually used as a term of respect - the implication is that the weapon is so sharp and precise you could sew with it. "That blade of his is a real seamster's needle. Be careful."   Bog Pudding: Filthy water, sewage, or slimy mud, especially bad-smelling. "The basement's been full of bog pudding since that flood."   Eat [the] Bog Pudding: Do something incredibly ill-advised. "You threw out the extra fabric? How could you eat the bog pudding like that?! How are we going to patch things now?"   Sailing to Alg: Wasting time on a fruitless endeavor. "Are you about done sailing to Alg? We need to get some real work done here." Origin: Alg is a fictional land from children's stories.   Grind(ing) [the] Salt: Preparing for an honored guest or to make a person feel especially welcome. Analogous to "rolling out the red carpet" in the real world. "You're really grinding the salt for the new blacksmith in town." Origin: In Karkovia, finely-ground salt is seen as a better way to spread it more evenly through a dish, enhancing its flavor. Therefore, when one wishes to prepare a special meal, it often is preceded by grinding salt more finely.   Gray the Stew: Overdo something."You've got nails, tongues, and a metal brace holding that corner together? You're graying the stew. It's just a chair!" Origin: This is a reference to boiling a stew until it all turns gray, overcooking it.
