The Great Blue Sand Waste.

The subject of myth and legend among both Largers and Smallers, the Great Blue Sand Waste is an expanse of desert made of shifting dunes of blue sands. While called a waste, the shifting sands hide valuable minerals. The sand is composed of mostly blue sapphire, with lapis lazuli  and traces of other blue gemstones found within the sands. Not much life finds a way to survive here and it is considered to be the territory of the Jerboan peoples.   The Jerboan people are a race of Smallers who excel in the harsh environments of desert life, with large ears that help keep them cool in the heat. They are the few who know the secret caverns and the pattern of the sands, which allows them to access the vast cave system underneath without as much risk of being buried alive. In these caverns are deposits of precious stones such as blue sapphire, lapis lazuli, star sapphires of varying blue shades as well as deposits of silver and iron. The cave systems are too small for Largers to make use of without tearing up the system with mining, risking angering the Jerboan and having their supply of magically crucial gems cut off.   Water is scarce, making every rainfall precious. Most of this ends up filtering eventually into the cave system, though Jerboan on the surface will catch whatever they can. The longer the water stays in the sands, the more magic becomes stored in the water. Because of this, the Jerboan have members of their society dedicated to the cave pools to dole out water and magic equally to all.   For the most part, travel through the Blue Sand Waste is difficult but doable. One has to make sure they have garments to keep sand out of eyes, nose, mouth and ears that also protects from the sun without overheating the body. A guide is recommended no matter the experience one has with exploring other deserts, as the Jerboan people will be able to best guide you through the sands, caves, and weather patterns. Double crossing or treating your guide in an ill manner may result in them disappearing into the sands, leaving you stranded in the middle of the ever shifting landscape.
