Smiling Man volcano

The Applescarn Mountain range is home to several volcanoes in the western and northern regions. One of the more well-known volcanoes is referred to as the “Smiling Man.”   The Smiling Man is named as such for the outer rim resembles a grin on one side and a tuft of hair on the other. It has erupted three times since its discovery in 14 AT, though some speculate the volcano has erupted several times before that date.   The travelers who discovered the Smiling Man were a pair of giantkin, Osmos Sunhammer, and Kiva Brumfist, who came across the outer rim during a hike. They took the news of their discovery to a village elder, who cautioned them to refrain from traveling too close to the area, should the volcano erupt.   The first eruption on record was on 23 AT. The lava burned several miles and burned animals under molten rock. Three days after the lava cooled, explorers found six goats under the dried lava and managed to bring one of the animals intact to Arcania where priests used magic to bring it back to life. This goat is affectionately named “Smiling Son,” and still resides in Arcania. Mages claim the lava gave Smiling Son immortality, though most believe the goat found a mate and had children, one of whom is the current Smiling Son.   The second eruption came years later, 41 AT during a ceremony where druids celebrated the induction of a new member of their circle. The druids fled the area and found shelter thanks to one of their brethren discovering a cave leading into The Below. Once it was safe to return to the area, the druids finished their ceremony and vowed never to disturb the land again.   The third eruption came in 64 AT when two monks, whose names are unknown, triggered it during a fight to the death. The two combatants were so powerful, that their blows repeatedly shook the mountain until lava burst from the crust. No one knows whether or not the monks survived.   Despite the fear of another eruption, the Smiling Man is now a tourist destination where Pinegaard natives and fey folk have picnics and special events. Local druids and mages keep an eye on the area in case the volcano erupts once more.
