Basilisk Scales
Basilisks are creatures found in deep caves or The Below, the underground region in Pinegaard. Aside from their vicious bite, sharp claws, and gaze that turns their victims to stone, basilisk are coveted for their rough scales used for armor.
There are three main methods of acquiring basilisk scales. The first is the most dangerous - hunting a basilisk. Many hunters have gone to confront the beasts in their lair and end up as a stone statue or return with a missing limb. The risk is worth the reward as collecting basilisk scales straight from the hide results in stronger material for the hunter.
The second method for collecting basilisk scales has resulted in less death. Some hunters wait until after the basilisk sheds their scales. Basilisks shed their scales twice a year. To lessen the risk, some collectors will wait 1-2 days before retrieving the material. This is considered less dangerous but just as difficult as scales can be lost if a basilisk unknowingly buries them or weather destroys them.
The third method is to breed basilisks and collect their scales. Basilisks can be trained and their scales removed, similar to cutting sheep’s wool. Few are brave enough to breed basilisks but those who do can earn a good living by selling the scales.
Basilisk scales have other uses, such as jewelry, tents, canvas, or creating dolls and mannequins.

Physical & Chemical Properties
Most adventurers use basilisk scales as components for armor, or they’ll take the material to a smith to fashion them into a set piece. Although it’s not as durable as plate mail, basilisk scales don’t make noise when people walk in it. Druids and giantkin living in the mountains wear basilisk scale because they believe it prevents the wearer from being petrified. There’s no evidence to prove this.
Color
Basilisk scale colors range from deep green, to rustic brown.
